  • I intend to do this job today and I will use this guides (for golf mk5): DIY: Changing brake pads & rotors | Volkswagen Rabbit/GTI/Jetta/GLI MkV DIY & FAQ Rear brake pads & discs, VW Gol

  • You can run the codes through a website such as:  http://vag-codes.info/#option-decoder   to get the descriptions.   For instance my car has - 1KF = Disc breaks, rear.   Then when you search on E

the caliper is only held on by the two 13mm bolts, you should only have the hand brake in the off position and thats it you dont need to touch the cable at all unless the brakes are binding ie the wheel dosnt spin when the hand brake is released, the caliper is probably seized in position mine were on the rear of my vrs i had to lever them off it was a bit of a pain but they came off along with some of the caliper paint ,

one point to note my car is a vrs and i had to remove the caliper carriers to take the rear discs off due to there size this was a massive pain in the butt i had to buy a three foot long breaker bar and a short reach m14 spline bit to loosen the carrier bolts as they were solid and there is limited space as well but i did it on my drive with just a trolley jack .

I think mine has seized because the wheel doesn't spin freely with the handbrake down. I can move it but it stops promptly when I stop spinning it I'll have to give it a little more welly or get the crow bar out!

I find wheels never spin freely with disc brakes, the pads are usually in contact with the disc all the time.

The rear of the factory pads have a gel type gasket which often just melts and the pads metal backing plate sticks to the caliper and piston, so making it difficult for you to separate. Judicious use of a large screwdriver and a rubber mallet is needed. For instance pull the caliper toward you while tapping the brake pad away from you then stick a large screwdriver between pad back and caliper and twist gently, but don't go mad. Once you've moved them a little you should be able to twist the caliper and slide it off.

Make sure you pull the slide pins back as well in case they are corroded to the caliper.

Mine were 272mm on back which strangely none of the majorfactor sites quoted when they listed available options. In the end, I went to a Bosch site and it listed part numbers for pads, discs and fitting kit for rear. Probably because they're Bosch calipers I suppose. In the end I bought mintex parts and they were about £60 for all the bits from premier factors delivered.

Those carrier bolts are a night mare. I got the rear m14 splines undone after hitting the breaker bar with a big lump of wood. The fronts I gave up on and have saved for another rainy day just about pulled my shoulder out trying to shift the front 21mm bolts and will definitely need to replace the bolts. I probably should replace the rear bolts too now.
