My Fabia vRS which I finally got in September came with the Skoda Symphony single CD stereo. I now want to add a CD changer and have found places which sell compatible changers. Can anybody tell me if there is a specific place where a CD changer should be installed in a Fabia and are the cables already there, or would I have to run them from the Head Unit?

mines came preinstalled with the changer under the passenger seat, so have a look under there to see if their are any cables

I added an Alpine changer from add-a-cdchanger.co.uk. First of all, I tried to fit it under the driver's seat, but it caught on the seat height adjuster, so I toyed with the idea of fitting it in the passenger footwell, but didn't want to risk SWMBO karate-kicking it by accident. Eventually, I ended up attaching it to the nearside rear wheel arch.

However...the wheel arch is not flat, so I had to make a baseplate out of wood, then I pulled back the carpetty stuff, attached the baseplate direct to the wheel arch with 'no more nails', replaced the carpet (waited 24hrs for the glue to cure) and then screwed the changer onto the baseplate through the carpet. After that, I disconnected the battery (just in case), popped the HU out using a high-tech blunt hacksaw blade snapped in two, and attached the interface box to the connector on the back. Next, I attached the changer lead to the interface box, and using a bent coathanger, drew the lead through the dashboard so that it came out in the top right-hand corner of the passenger footwell. (There are various holes and gaps that allow you to do this) Once I'd pulled the whole length of the changer lead through into the footwell, I wedged the interface box into a gap at the back of the hole where the HU goes (a bit fiddly), and reinstalled the HU. After that, it was a case of feeding the changer lead back to the boot (I used a couple of cable clips to go along the top of the passenger footwell, and then tucked it behind the plastic bit that goes along the side of the car under the doors). Once I got to the boot, I fed the lead behind the carpet, looped up the slack in the gap between the carpet and the wheelarch just behind the bit that the seats clip into, and fed the end out of the hole where the load net loop is. Connected the lead to the changer, et voila! Works a treat!

Just don't get a changer with more than six discs, 'cos the HU can't handle more than that. Also, you might want to fit some sort of guard, what with it being in the boot...

You need to use the VW/Skoda 6 cd model with the 12 way oblong plug fitted on the end because this fits nicely under the front seat.
