help with oil please

Featured Replies

hiya guys, just a quick question im gona service my octy next week and was wondering should i stick to vag oil or go down the castrol route? my car is a 2.0 tfsi. i think its 5w30, but thats not what bothers me. ive read thing in the past in magazines saying that although oil may be of the correct viscousity if it is not up to vag spec it can cause component failure, in the case i read it was a golf pd150 engine and i litterally wore through the hydraulic buckets, quite nasty.

any help much appreciated

thanks

Lots of threads here about oil, a search will find plenty of advice. I use VW approved 504.00 oil in my 2.0 TFSI (and 504.00 is the crucial spec to look for, not viscosity ratings). My dealer uses Castrol and Shell oils, other manufacturers also make 504.00 oils. Price vary a bit (and dealers are often not the cheapest suppliers her in Oz)

the vag longlife 5w30 oil is the one needed, dealers use castrol but this is expensive quantum do a vag approved longlife which is more cost effective and is the castrol made

thanks guys, i was looking at castrol edge 5w30 does anyone know if thats approved? i dont mind spending a bit more if its worth it but if theres no point id rather save my cash. ill pop into vw and see about that longlife and compare prices. im glad i asked as i was sure there would be some spec somewhere it would need to meet.

cheers

Are you in Ireland ?? Castrol will be expensive, my local Skoda dealer has stopped using the Skoda oil because of cost and he is now using Valvoline to the VAG specs. Just make sure that you get the VW spec to match your engine.

Yes the Castrol Edge does have the VW 504 requirements - I supplied this stuff to my dealer at my last service for them to use.

thanks for all the input guys much appreciate it. i live in inverness. i bought comma prolife 5w30 it says meets exacting vag 504.00 spec. its certainly ticks all the boxes and it was a bit cheaper than castrol and its a 5 litre tub not a 4 litre.

im doing a full service, oil/filter, pollen filter, plugs and fuel filter. im fitting a evoms intake and powerflex torque arm bush. is it worth doing a write up with pics on any of this do you think?

cheers

Castrol makes the VW Quantum oil brand - for 1L local VW place is £11 vs Halfords £16 for a nice Castrol bottle
