Bluefin for vRS 170 TDI CR?

Featured Replies

I am interested in an ECU Remap for my new diesel CR vRS.

I have only found bluefin to be the company that offer a remap for the CR engine.

I also like the idea that I can add/remove the config as I please. I feel this may be usefull in keeping my guarantee :D

They claim to offer an increase of around 30 bhp with improved fuel consumption.

Does anyone have this on the same engine or can anyone offer any advice for me as dont really know too much about it

Thanks in advance

just got this (Bluefin for Octavia 170bhp CR) and literally just plugged it into my car... will try to let you know in a few days if you're still interested :)

I would be interested to see how you are getting on with the Bluefin especially if there is any improvement in mpg

Loads of people do maps for the CR now. P-Torque seem to be rated pretty highly on here and many people have commented on it taking several attempts with Bluefins before they get a map they're happy with.

I have the bluefin since 10 july 2009 and no problem until now.

No problems, but what about the performance and fuel economy?

left the w out of now

Although his sentence construction implies he now has a problem, I don't think that's what he meant

ah, I was wondering if the poster meant no problem todate or no problem until now meaning there is one now.....my bad.

Yeah, I know, and you could be right. I guess the OP will have to tell us for sure :)

Ok, so had chance to see what this was like after a couple of days use.

Purchase

Purchased the unit off ebay for around £70 (incl. P&P) - confirmed that the seller had returned their car (Audi S3) to standard prior to me bidding, as this meant that the confirmed cost for Superchips to change the unit to an Octavia would be £196 (incl. P&P). Cost would have been a lot higher had the seller not returned their car to standard. (forget what exactly but approx £300?)

Received unit from ebay seller promptly, sent it immediately to Superchips (£7 next-day) with a covering note and got the unit back around 3 or 4 days later, reset and ready for use with my car.

As the unit I bought came with instuctions, it was really easy to see how it worked, and you basically put it in the car. Press a few buttons, then turn the key (but don't turn on the ignition) and press a few more buttons. It then reads your engine ECU(?). Whole process took around 5 mins, maybe a few more

Once this is all done, you install the software on your computer (latest can be found here: bluefin - bluefin Software ) - it then uploads the readings it took to Superchips server. You then wait up to 24hrs (or a few minutes in my case!) and get an email telling you you can connect to the server again to get your new remap.

Then just connect it up to the car again - few more clicks, wait for it to upload the remap and off you go

Performance

Right - well you probably knew all of that anyways, but here's how it went with performance (as far as I can tell)

Notable performance boost in 1st and 2nd gear, especially when you hit around 2k RPM

All other gears you can notice an improvement, but not as much as 1st / 2nd - (unfortunately this makes it easier to spin wheels)

I'm getting around the same MPG at present, but this is down to two things in my opinion.

1) in the city i'm getting less MPG due to more accelerating (stopping / starting etc)

2) on the motorway i'm getting more MPG due to constant speed

I do around 80 miles a day at present (mixture of motorway and country roads)

It's still early days tho, cos i'm obviously driving it a bit 'thriftier' at present just for the fun of it - so maybe MPG will get better! - it is slowly going up!

Opinion

Much happier with this than I would have been with a tuningbox, and think the price I paid was probably similar.

Definite improvements in acceleration, and hopefully over time MPG - will have a better idea in a month or so...

Total cost of around £270 is great value as well, if you're happy to risk the ebay route! - it's true I could have got a proper remap for around the price I paid but wanted Bluefin as I wanted something I could add / remove when I wanted, and the extra superchips warranty certainly helped! :) Also, I have the option of selling the unit on at a later date if necessary...

If anyone has any questions, just give us a shout :)

... i forgot one of the most important pieces of information, in that it's only costing me an extra £5 per month on my insurance policy :)

Interesting read, but I am surprised 1st/2nd gears are more obvous in terms of power increases that 3rd/4th etc?

Have you noticed more black smoke punting out the back? Iv got a revo map on my leon (still waiting for my CR VRS to be built) and whilst im tempted to get a remap im fed up of cleaning soot off the rear bumper.

Me too. When I had the custom Jabba applied to the Fabia, 1st and 2nd were not much different as they're too short to feel the torque gains (especially 1st) but you really really felt the gains in 3rd and above where the car simply flew in comparison to before - effortless power.

I have read on here though that some people have had to do several attempts to get a Bluefin map they're happy with. This is the reason when my remap time comes I will be taking it to a reputable place such as P-Torque or Jabba again as it'll be right first time round and any adjustments can be done there and then rather than re-downloading another one a day later and trying again.

I take it the main benefit of the Bluefin is that you can remove it and revert to standard? Or is it just so you can map your car without ever leaving the driveway?

The CR TDI comes with a DPF so there will be no smoke at all. That is the same for the VRS PD as well.

Is your Leon the 1.9 or the 2.0FR? If its the 2.0 then that too will have a dpf.

Hi

The DPF in the CR VRS will filter the soot meaning nothing will come out of the back.

This is why accurate fuelling adjustment is required to ensure no increase in unburnt diesel reaches the DPF

Marvellous. No I had a 1.9 FR TDi 150. Im afrad im not very technicaly minded. what do you mean by accurate fueling adjustment? Sorry if im sounding dumb.

Both really, I guess. You can switch back and forth between remapped and standard (plus reapply your map should a dealer overwrite it during a service or anything). And like you say you can also do all this yourself from home, which could be a benefit if you lived a long way from the folks that did your custom remap and it needed reapplying or tweaking.

...there's also the superchips warranty :)

maybe i was wrong with my wording of '3rd / 4th' etc... it didn't help that it was 2 days between me fitting it and then driving it

i'm gonna take it off my car for a few days to see how the performance is - my mpg has not been changed at all (still averaging 47.4mpg)

This engine doesn't have the DPF, hence the smoke.

Some remaps (or more so tuning boxes) overfuel the engine, therefore leading to more smoke due to the unburnt fuel. This is also no good with a DPF as it would cause it to clog up, hence the need to 'accurate fueling adjustment', i.e. putting the right amount of fuel in, not too much or in fact too little.

hmmmm i tend to just brim mine as i do a good 700 miles a week.
