Starter Motor Packed in!

Featured Replies

My starter motor packed in yesterday. Went for diesel, turned the car off, went to turn it back on and nothing. Lights flicked off then back on. Think the starter motors given up the ghost. Anyone else had this happen, its a late 55 plate VRS.

Also whats the best thing to do with it. Get it re-conned or buy a new one, and where from? Any ideas would be good. cheers guys

sure its not the battery mate?

my fabia wouldn't start a while ago and I thought it was the starter motor or the alternator. checked the battery with a voltmeter and thats what the problem was

Definately not the battery! Bumpstarts nae bother, lights and everything work. Doesnt even click at all.

check the small wire going to the starter, they have a habit of snapping, due to the loom being too tight

Dont forget testing a car battery by switching all the lights on is not a real test on a battery, total current taken about 30 amps. The Starter motor when turning the engine can take from 350 to 650 amps, depending on engine warm ,summer weather, to engine cold, winter weather. This is the sort of load one needs to put on a battery to test it correctly. Also just putting a voltmeter across the battery alone is not testing the battery either.

It will show anything from 12 to 16 volts. If the car has just been running you will get the higher voltage even if the battery is bad. Better to put a voltmeter across the battery ,whilst the engine is being turned by the starter is a battery test. I appreciate if the starter is faulty this test cannot be done. I would always swop the battery (or jump it from a good battery ) to find out which is bad before changing the starter motor,or buying a new battery.

A mate of mine had mentioned this wire youre talking about which snaps. Apparently the AA came out when his pd130 ibzia did this and it was a wire. He wasnt sure which one though. I was just gona rip the starter out, test it on a bench, and see if its that, if not was going to check wiring. Definately isnt the battery mate, i understand where your coming from though. Does anyone have a picture of an accurate description of this wires location. Starter wasnt noisy or struggling ever which makes me wonder why it would just go, does happen though. Cheers, Bennett

i'm not sure where it breaks, but it is the trigger wire that makes the starter turn, i would trace that back from the starter to the main loom,

its a red and black wire
