VRS Rad fans stuck on :-(

Featured Replies

Hi

Had the VRS for 6 days and just got stuck in a traffic jam, when I got home the rad fans continued to run after the engine was switched off, 'no problem' I thought as its probably very hot.

Ten minutes later they are still running, go for a quick spin around the block and they are still on when the engine is switched off, I had to find and disconnect the fuse to stop them.

I have searched the forum and found 2 posts about this type of problem, the first one was a wire to the fans chaffed/shorted out, the other was sorted by a Skoda dealer as it was "a common problem" but unfortunately what was actually done to fix the problem was not mentioned.

Does anyone know what the "common problem" is or have any idea what I need to do to fix it.

Thanks

p.s apart from this problem it is a very nice car :)

I think i recall hearing that there is a problem with the fusebox ontop of the battery with the fabia vrs. But dont hold me to that one.

I did find this thread using the search button though

Could be the same problem your experiencing?

Thanks for the reply

The post you found is the one I mentioned, I think I may have a different problem as the fans have stuck on after being in a traffic jam, they came on when needed but failed to switch off, prior to the traffic jam they were not staying on.

As I have only just brought the car I've not had chance to get a haynes manual yet so I was hoping someone may be able to suggest were to start looking for the problem, rad fan switch maybe ?

Cheers

Is there not any sort of warrenty on the car, or was it a 'private sale'?

I would have a look in the fusebox ontop of the battery, as i've heard these can have some visable issues within. I think it was something that had melted.

I was hoping someone else would have messaged by now, as im not totally clued up about the Fabia's.

Hi

I had to disconnect the rad fans by the fuse on top of the battery, it all looked ok and I gave the wires a wiggle etc and the fans still stayed on.

I'm not to worried as I will use it with the fans disconnected, I live in the country so its rare to get stuck in traffic.

If I knew were the rad fan switch was located I would disconnect it to see if the fans switch off.

The car was a private sale so no warranty, its a 2005 VRS, it was brought from someone who also lived in the countryside so the rad fans may not have actually been on for a long long time !

Don't leave it too long with the fuse out, as it isn't necessarily standing in traffic that is the problem, as if the engine is still on the water pump keeps the coolant circulation going. The point of the fans coming on after the engine is switched off is for them to cool the radiator and keep a convection flow going of the coolant to stop the engine heat spiking. A warped cylinder head is VERY expensive:eek:

The fans on my Audi A3 did this, and the Audi dealer told me it was a known issue with VAG fans, and the fix was to replace the fans themselves. The lease company sorted so I can't give you an idea on price I'm afraid, but being Audi I know it wasn't cheap.

The fan switch is located low-down on the nearside of the radiator, a little above the bottom hose outlet. The electrical connector has a tab on it which must be depressed, then pull off the connector.

Thanks Hauptmann, I'll disconnect the fan switch tomorrow to see if that stops the fans from running.

Not had chance to fully test it but I think I have fixed the problem.

First went to disconnect the fan switch on the radiator and straight away saw that the wires had chaffed through, were the wires come out of the plug that connects to the fan switch there is another large bunch of wires that have a plastic protective cover, the fan switch wires are pressed against/around this plastic cover and they have rubbed through.

There are 3 wires going to the rad fan switch, one had completely broken, one had chaffed through so the wire was visible and one was ok, I cut the plug off, cut out the knackered bit of wire and soldered/heatshrunk in new pieces of wire.

Connected it all up and the fans were still running with the engine off, scratched my head and cursed a bit then disconnected the rad fan switch and the fans still stayed on, this made me think it could only be the rad fan control box so I took it off.

Called around a few car shops and know one had it in stock so I thought what the hell and took it apart, one of the two relays within the box was black and burnt looking so I cleaned the contacts with wet & dry and sprayed it all with some contact cleaner, checked it all with an ohms meter and it seemed ok so I put it back together, sealed up the box and re-fitted it.

Fans were then off.........hurray.

Switched the air con on and the fans came on at slow speed, not had chance to test the fans come on when the engine is hot as I ran out of time but hopefully they will be ok.

Excellent work, well done.
