Wireless help needed laptop refuses to connect

Featured Replies

Hi Guys, my mrs laptop has been fine for connecting to the internet wireless until today it would not connect the 2 desktop machines are fine though but these are connected by crossover cable.

I have reset my router to its default settings and switched off the mac filtering for now but it still refuses to connect without wires. When i go into the "connect to" tab it shows that the wirless adaptor on the laptop is connected and the router is showing that its transmitting the signal.

The only thing i have noticed is that on the laptop the internet gateway says disabled and when i select enable it says connecting then goes back to disabled, I dont know if this should be disabled in the first place as the laptop wirless card states its enabled.

The laptop is running XP Home - any help would be great as i have tried system restore and it still refuses to connect.

Cant understand why and how or if its just lost its way - Thanks again

from a command prompt run "ipconfig /all" and then copy and paste the results up to here.

(it's mark then copy IIRC)

Have you updated the wireless drivers recently?

Could also be a channel conflict issue. Ie someone near you's now on the same channel causing a data crash.

Anything else moved in your house/flat? Wireless phone base station moved perhaps? Can the laptop see any wireless networks at all? Can it see your network, but not connect?

Quite a few possibilities at the moment unfortunately!

Steve

Do you mean do this from the laptop that wont connect or from the main PC where the router is attached.

Will get the laptop details up in a min

Thanks guys for any help with this.

Can you confirm what you mean by the 'internet gateway' in this context?

In a command prompt window, if you type 'ping www.google.com' does it respond? If it does let us know.

If it doesn't, try 'ping 209.85.229.105'.

If that doesn't work, try 'ping 192.168.1.1'.

Let us know how those go.

The "Internet Gateway" thing is when I click Start - Connect To - Show all connections I get the following ...

"Internet Gateway" - Internet connection Disabled

"Lan or High Speed Internet" Wirless network adaptor connection (connected)

"Local Area Connection" Network Cable Unplugged

"Local Area Connection 3" - Disabled - Bluetooth PAN network adaptor

I have done more of the ping stuff and got the following data if this helps...

OK, so you can reach the router, but the router doesn't appear to be routing for that machine. Odd that it's just that one. While I have a think, turn the router off and back on if you haven't already and try again.

I have switched it off but still the same its a strange one as one min it was working and all of a sudden just will not connect.

Its like you say it can see the router but wont connect to the internet, but then the wirless adaptor states its connected.

It wouldnt be a router prob would it? or something to do with the wpa2 encryption but these havent been changed and i have disabled the mac filtering also

Thanks again Wega3k Cheers

I say this but then it would not connect the adaptor to the router so dont think its the wpa2 setup

What is the tunnelling set up for?

Also have you applied the WPA2 updates to windows XP.

A google should find them for you

Yeah done this and it wont still connnet as for the tunnelling i dont know what its for :D what do you use it for lol...

Have i to try and connect the laptop to the router with a crossover cable and see if it connects while its hard wired.

Certainly is a strange one as nothings been changed then this happens.

Thanks guys.

Although in theory the underlying encryption shouldn't affect things a couple of layers up the stack, I had the case with my new laptop where, when using WEP, connectivity would be fine for a few minutes, then TCP connections would degrade to the point where they stopped working completely whilst UDP was totally unaffected. Weird. It forced my upgrade from WEP to WPA2. It's worked perfectly since upgrading.

Indulge me...

Open up a command prompt and do an 'ipconfig /release', then an 'ipconfig /renew'. Then post the output from ipconfig and try pinging Google again.

You're thinking what I am thinking, which is I wonder if the address is coming from DHCP or hard set?

  • Author

Think we are getting somewhere...

I disabled all the security wpa etc within the router and the laptop goes on the net..but even when i select crap wep for security it goes back to refusing to connect.

I used to have the router set to WPA2 Personal and the encryptipn was TKIP or AES

Why does it not like the security set up after months, is it the laptop thats the problem.

I will post that info you asked for in a min.

Thanks again

It looks like the laptop will only want to go on the net without any security whatsoever

Have you installed a new anti-virus?

I've seen where these can mess up the connection by installing a packet sniffer and scanner between the OS and the IP layer.

What router do you have?

I suggest creating a new WPA2 key and using WPA2-Personal (also called WPA2-PSK) with a key at least 32 characters long and using AES.

Then get the windows patch for XP for WPA2:

The Wi-Fi Protected Access 2 (WPA2)/Wireless Provisioning Services Information Element (WPS IE) update for Windows XP with Service Pack 2 is available

Then try it with everything turned on and a new key.

Also perhaps try setting your routers address to 172.17.0.1.

Settings would be:

IP = 172.17.0.1

netmask = 255.255.255.0

This will allow you any address on 172.17.0.* for the network.

Will then be interesting to see what comes up from that.

Obviously any machine that does not use DHCP will need to have their address changed manually by yourself.

Once that has been done try an "ipconfig /all" again and post the results for the wireless here.

Yeah, I agree the antivirus software is the next place to look.

We know that your two wired PCs work (no encryption). We know that your laptop works when wired and with encryption turned off.

We know that you've not altered encyption settings on the router before it broke.

Can you try disabling kaspersky on the laptop? I think what's happened is you've jinxed it by bigging it up in that other thread. :)

  • Author

I have disabled kaspersky and it still wont connect have changed the wpa2 key and rebooted the router but again its the same.

The router is a Linksys WAG54G2

The encryption options on the router are as follows...

WEP

WPA - Personal

WPA 2 - Personal (this is what option has always been selected)

WPA 2 - Mixed

WPA - Enterprise

WPA 2 - Enterprise

Disable

Works fine with the disable option which isnt good :rotz:

The laptop has service pack 3 do you think the above will be included, also how would i go about changing the routers address manualy.

I also havent installed any new anti virus software been using the Kaspersky stuff for a few years now - I thought this may be the prob at first then disabled it and it was still the same.

Thanks for the help.

I believe it is, yes.

I think you need to take something else out of the equation. Have you got another device, e.g. an iphone to confirm that still works with WPA turned on on the router? And on the flip side, you could see if your laptop could connect to a different wireless network that's encrypted.
