Indicators

Featured Replies

My octavia's indicator "clicker" has suddenly gone from a regular 1.5 beats per second to a seemingly random sequence. How do these things work? Presumably this is a little relay held somewhere. Something I can fix/replace myself?

Is it on one side? Most cars have a short so that if a bulb goes then the indicator

will blink quicker. So checking your bulbs would be an easy first step.

I had a dodgy earth (or something) on my Astra which caused a short, so sometimes

the indicator flashed fast and sometimes it didn't. Cost me a tenner at a local

independent to get it fixed, but you should be able to use the warranty if this is

the problem...

it's on both sides :(

I was hoping to avoid a trip to my dealer - means half a day off work for me (not all bad I suppose! )

indicator relay is part of the hazzard light switch you will have to get hazzard light switch should take about 2 mins but my current record is 36 secs.

I have had this in an Octavia. You unfortunalty need a new indicator relay. That was what solved it in my car!

I know this is an old thread, but this reply might help someone searching in a few months, like these messages helped me!

It is actually possible to repair it, if your fault is the same as mine, and you know your way around a relay.

If you get the hazard warning switch out (not difficult - don't be afraid to stick your screwdriver in, it comes out fairly easily), then remove the triangular switch from the front (similarly) you can then dismantle the relay, it comes out of the rear.

If you plug it back into the car, then switch on the hazard or indicators, you should see that the relay actuates (i.e. the gold-coloured contact part moves towards the coil). If this happens, but the indicator telltales don't light, then the contact is not making properly (this is the fault I had).

You can see that on one side of the relay there are two small metal pips which hit eachother when the relay makes, it is probable that these are not making contact correctly.

I used a small screwdriver to scratch the faces of these pips and to bend the flexible side in a little and, hey presto, it works perfectly now!!

I'd still recommend replacing the part, but this is a good short term fix while you're waiting if you don't fancy sticking your arm out into the snow and hail at 70mph (or whatever ;) !

My indicators have just gone t!~s up. Started randomly going a bit faster, then nothing, then normal etc.

Has now completely failed, but the hazards are still working  . Any ideas? I hope this isn't expensive to fix as I'm px the car in eight weeks for a shiny new Octy 2.0 TDi DSG. The car must know I'm giving it the boot and is making me pay :(

This was brillaint advice - I am stuck in the middle of nowhere with no chance of getting a new part for at least a few days - I followed your temporary fix advice and it worked. OK it took me ages geting he red triangle off and removing the relay (i did it wih a small kitchen knife) and I was looking after a busy 2 year old at he time but unbelievably!! i got my indicators working - I shall be able to drive tomorrow thank you so much.

Clearly this is an issue affecting many cars......

Please allow me to thank "Scrattox" and "thbkw" for their helpful information.

I had this exact issue and fixed it based on their words of wisdom.

To make the process even clearer for people in my position in future months, I made the following (attached) document with pictures. :)

If you spot a mistake or want to make comment feel free to add a post (all for the greater good etc!)

Safe motoring.

Process to fix 1998 Skoda Octavia irregular indicator.doc

Unbelievable!

great guide, how to fix this problem, Thanks "Scrattox", "thbkw" and "DanSilver".

I am originally from Czech Republic, where is probably the bigest Skoda fan base. Was struggling to find any advice there (except replacement), and finally found it here in the UK, great.

Would you mind if I place your word guide to www.skodahome.cz website? There are loads of people only replacing this part and wouldbe very grateful for this.

Hiya. I can't say about copying the guide, but I'm certain there'd be no objection to you making a deep link to this thread from Skodahome.

I know. I placed the link, but translation would be better as not everybody can understand english

I recieved permission from Dan, so will place the translation there.

Many thanks to Dan & others who helped to sort this problem out. :handshke:

and while it is all apart, you can add a VW relay and get one-touch indicators too
