I have seen it stated on other forums that the families involved have requested that people resist the urge to speculate on the circumstances surrounding this tragic accident.

Well, a 40mph head-on would be the same as an 80 mph collision into something stationary, so has all the dangers. Real shame as he sounds like he was a top chap.
