Leaking Boot

Featured Replies

Guys

Gave the car a good clean on the weekend and while I was at it, fitted a set of mudflaps. Needed the jack so into the boot I went and noticed some water pooling in the spare wheel well. I assumed it was ingress from the jet wash................and then this morning I noticed pooling on the lip of the boot. My car is parked facing downhill at a slight tilt and I'm at a loss as to where this could be coming from.

I'm gonna throw it at the dealer to have a look at but was wondering if anybody had any ideas? Anybody else suffered / suffering from leaking boot seal problems?

Cheers

I'd be interested to hear any thoughts. My last two cars have leaked (one bad crash repair, one designed in Spain where they clearly tested it away from the plain) and I know the signs (excessive condensation) that have appeared with my Octy. Can't find any ingress but it's just too moist inside for my liking.

I have heard about this on the Octy a few times. There's only really a couple of places it can get in - the seal, the rear lights or (don't forget this one) the flaps behind the bumper that let the air out.

On my BMW 318iS the boot flaps were no longer sealing properly and let loooads of water in. Nightmare to find - I ended up stripping out the boot and pouring water over various parts with a hose whilst looking inside. Found it fairly quickly then.

OK, boot flaps can be ruled out - the water was actually pooling on the lip of the boot so I reckon its the seal. Waiting to throw it at the dealer..........

Off to the ever helpful Rivervale in Portslade tomorrow morning. Fantastic service as ever;

"Hi Steve, my car has a leaking boot"

"Oh dear, would you like us to have a look"

"Would you?"

"No problem, tomorrow OK? Want a loan car? Mazda 6 do you?"....

Let you know the outcome...........

You've got a photo which is handy so they'll have no excuse - you've done the diagnostic work for them so to speak.

Do let us know what they do to fix it - handy if it ever happens to the rest of us.

Yep, I got this - not as much as that though. Was the rear washer pipework inside the boot hatch. Sorted at last service under warranty.

Sounds like yours is fresh/rainwater though? I'd say a loose or faulty bootseal. Hope it gets sorted anyway.

Steve

Mines like that but hasn,t got past the groove in the seal (yet)......

I have that after heavy rain and when the car is on a camber. Definitely rain water. I plan to put a new seal on.

Well the car is in but no word yet. Given that its only done 1.5K I'll be worried if its the boot seal but to be honest, I can't think what else it could be apart from a leaking bolt hole where the spoiler is fixed.

Will keep you updated.

In the meantime this Mazda 6 is completely horrible - my Fiat Punto had better feel and build quality that this!

I get the same in my boot. The seal seems to somehow be filling with water - when I run my fingers along the seal, water squirts out of the air holes in the seal (All of which open to the inside of the boot BTW).

All I've done is put a small hole in the bottom of the seal at one side of the lowest section of the boot so water can drain out of the seal and it seems to have sorted it. I took the lining off the inside of the boot door and no water seems to be in there too, so the seal itself seems to be the problem.

Maybe the boot striker needs adjusting? so the tailgate closes tighter to the seal.

Hi Guys,

Look at the rear wiper shaft seal. Cured the exact same problem for me.

Hope this helps.

Paul

Rivervale are fitting a new boot seal today..................we shall see if this cures it. I have a feeling it won't. :(

They tried to blame the RGM Rearguard to begin with.......

Can't wait to get my car back.....the Mazda is awful!

Anything in particular I should look for? I looked under the boot trim and everything seemed to be dry, but since it's been lashing rain all day so far, I reckon this evening would be a good time to go checking it again...

OK, car picked up from Rivervale this evening and it looks as if its going to get a severe testing on Sunday - the weather forecast is horrible!!

Apparently they stuck a mechanic in the boot and turned the jetwasher on the car!!

One of the girls in service said she saw ther weirdest thing when the mechanic was kneeling in the boot it looked as if he didn't have any legs!!!!

Will let you know how bad it leaks on Sunday...............

Hmmm.....the old seal on your car looked ok, unless it was severly squashed I doubt a new seal will fix it but you never know.....

Does the boot sit flush with the body when closed? Just wondering if there's an obvious gap with it not being as tight as it should when shut.

The boot sits fine - no obviously larger shutline or misalignment issues. Apparently they gave it a proper going over with the jetwash. The weather report for this weekend is awful so it can sit outside (minus its headlights which I intend to fit a HID kit to) and we'll see the result on Monday morning when I open the trunk........

I'm amazed that the Octy seems to have "issues" with door and boot seals either sueaking or leaking. Its not rocket science and seals have been around long enough for designers and manufacturers to understand them...........or so you would think!

4 years later - what was the outcome?:D

I'd like to know too:)

I have had water in the wheel well also. I stripped back the carpet around the CD player to find the rear screen washer pipe disconnected as stated in previous threads. I re connected it last week and dried the boot out.

Today I discovered a little bit more water in the boot and now wondering if it is also the seal. I have just added a few holes to the seal also to see if it makes a difference.

going on abit this thread lol

My FL fills with water every time its wet .I have had the lights out and resealed them but its still at it.

my water seems to get in round the rear panel somehow ,my boot mats dry (also a plastic boot liner but its never wet).

I never noticed when it was my company car cause i never changed to a spare as i got mobile fitters out

but recently started to condensate the windows in the sun when washing her.so i think its just started imho

Remove the trim which has the net on the right. Behind it you will find a vent, this might be leaking around its edge

is there one on both sides pal ?

i have resealed the rear clusters and this morning cut a few little holes under the rubber seal and put a humid trap in spare well to dry her out.

Off the top of my head i cant remember. I think its only drivers side but worth taking the cd changer out and having a look

Also got water in the wheel well so will try making holes in the bottom of the seal as it does seem full of water. The boot floor is wet nearly as far back as the rear seats, but only on the drivers side.
