How acurate are a cars dash computer for miles per gallon figs

Featured Replies

Just wondered about this my MK1 Octavia shows it returns around 44 mpg on a run but when we are pottering around town it shows on the dash computer that the car is returning just 16 miles to the gallon.

It got me thinking how acurate are they? as i would hate to think i was doing 16 miles to the gallon around town. :rotz: Mind you its always been like this.

Its a 1.6 AEH 8 Valve petrol engine.

Car is running ok though, just that the dash computer for the MPG alarms me at times I just switch it to the clock lol.

Has anyone else found this

Sounds to me as if 16 MPG is about right round town for a 1.6 Petrol

But the way to check, is fill the car up to the brim, note the mileage, then run round town for a about 200 miles, then fill back up and note the miles, then divide the liters put in by 4.546 to give galls the decide the miles by the galls and that will give you the MPG

Honestly - Thats not good, when you say for a 1.6 shouldnt it do better than a bigger engine say 1.8 as someone on our street has a 1.8 and they say its showing 26 mpg around town. Mind you his car is a few years old not 11 like mine.

Cheers

My Mk1 1.9TDI was 10% over optemistic, the Mk2 1.9 DSG Tdi 7% over and current BMW 118D is about 4% over.

My 1.6 says mid 20's around town, but it is the later BFQ engine. Get between mid 30's to 40 mpg on longer runs. Or so it says.

Rough guide only i'd say. My Fabia VRS shows average of 55 mpg. But true brim to brim filling and the maths using 4.546 as stated by Radiotwo above regularly gives me 48 mpg. Not to overoptomistic I suppose !!. Thank god the petro; guage is accurate.lol

I have an iphone app called Gas Buddy that does all the calculations for me, I just enter the quantity and odometer reading each time I fill up. It's always within a tenth of the car readout between fills.

A 1.6 engine is quite possibly less economical than a 1.8 especially if it's older. A larger engine working less hard usually returns better mpg figures, and the manufacturers are always working to improve them.

Depends how you are driving. If you are constantly stuck in traffic or stop starting at lights you would get through a power of fuel without getting anywhere quickly. So your comp could be spot on or even optimistic.

My Octavia 1.9Tdi DSG says Average 52.5 mpg every tank but when you work it out off a fuel receipt for a full tank it is 46.9 mpg - so about 10% optimistic. My other car is a Mondeo ST Tdci and it shows the same pattern.

My PD105 had a 9-10% over-read. My PD170 has a 4% under-read.

After doing the brim to brim method a few times to get an average, I've worked out that car dash computer is only 0.5mpg out, not bad!:D

Last week i filled it up to the brim and did 15 miles around town then noticed the fuel gauge dropped a bit so went back to fill up and it cost £5.20 on the first click shut off using the same pump at the same station.

This week we have done 31 miles and filled it back up again first shut off from the pump same garage same pump and it took £11.87

The computer shows its averaging 14 miles per gallon round town but its realisticaly looking like 12:thumbdwn:

On a run its great i can do 170 miles on £19 cant understand why its being so greedy around town, my father in laws 1.9 BMW is returning 32 around town and 41 on a run.

Think i will be changing in the new year.

This old chestnut!

Over about last 3000 miles, my computer says 48mpg, receipts say 44-45mpg.
