Unusual tyre question

Featured Replies

My Mum ownes an 06 Fabia vrs which she loves to bits.... apart from the loud tyre noise on the rural roads around the Thirsk area where she lives.

She has owned the car from new and its always been a bit noisey on the std Bridgestone Turanza tyres which have now done 26K.

Can anyone advise on a tyre that runs quieter..... she's a pensioner so is'nt looking for max on the limit grip....I hope :D

Thanks.

anything is quieter than Bridgestones, so the choice is endless

There's a number of tyre related posts here but I have heard that Toyo T1-R, Uniroyal rainsports are very quiet and have excellent grip in dry and good in wet also. Not too bad a price either and probably cheaper than the Turanza's.

grip = safety too :) stopping distances increase greatly with crap tyres not to mention cornering

noticed T1R's are slightly quieter than the michelins that were on it before, and nice and grippy... if you manage to do 26k on a set though i'd be impressed

When I bought my vRS in August 06 it was shod with Toyo T1Rs,and they were as noisy as hell. They were replaced with Vredestein Sportrac 3s,also noisier than a noisy thing.I then put on Michelin Pilot Exalto PE2s in March this year. They make no noise at all. They also have an asymmetric tread pattern, unlike the previous two.I wonder if the trendy symmetrical V groove tread pattern is inherently noisy.By the way,all three makes of tyre provide more than enough grip.

Michelin Pilot Exalto PE2s are available from Kwik-fit at a discount price (especially if ordered online). Compared to the Cooper tyres I have on now, I know Conti Sports Contact 2's are much quieter. The Contis also lasted me for 30K miles with a half-time front to back swap over. I will be having the Michelins next because of the good Kwik-fit price and Tonto's recommendation (surely a knowledgeable chap judging by his appreciation of Bishops Farewell beer).

do check what Kwikfit include in the price as balancing, valves and disposals costs are usually 'extras'

and aint cheap either. Brittannia tyres are the dogs cahunas.

FAlken 912's would be just right. Should be about £60 a corner fitted and they are loads better than the OEM's in all departments. I have just done 30k on a set and they have been faultless

Hankook Evo V12s seem to review quite well for noise...

Good cheap dealer on the trading estate in Thirsk - as you go in the entrance nearest the A19/168 roundabout they are about 100 yards on the left.

Fitted my last Uniroyal rainsport 2 a couple of weeks ago £71 each - good tyres

Don't fit Kumho KU31s if you are looking for a quiet tyre. They grip well, but are noisier and have increased my fuel consumption.

Fuel consumption will increase with new tyres anyway, so don't necessarily attribute this to a particular make/model of tyre. You have a slight increase in rolling radius and also more friction from the taller treadblocks.

They want £8.50 per tyre for fitting and balancing and £1.50 for disposal. It works out at £401.80 for a set of 4 but you get £40 in fuel vouchers.

  • 2 weeks later...

I've always found michelin to be good quiet tyres but they are at a premium price.
