Will my felicia be able to tow a caravan?

Featured Replies

Can a skoda felicia, year 2000, 1300 pull a caravan, would love a small caravan but there is no point if my car wouldn't be able to manage it.

Depends on the weight of the caravan. You'd probably want the 1.6.

According to the Haynes manual....

Max towing weight - braked trailer 900kg, unbraked 400kg, maximum towing hitch downward load 50kg. So it would probably just about do a small caravan. Would await confirmation on this though from more knowledgeable sources! :)

It'll have to be quite a light caravan - max braked weight is 900kg.

The towing limit for a 1300 felly is 400kg unbraked and 900kg braked. Factor in a small caravan with the air resistance and you won't be braking any speed limits that's for sure!

What about one of those caravan tent jobbies? Much lighter and smaller so not as much drag.

I once towed a friend in their Citroen Zantia 1.9td for a short distance including a small gradiant hill and that was pretty painful. I thinkn we're talking about over 900kg for that car though.

Thank you, were thinking of a trailer tent as well, which could be an option, looks like the caravan may be out. Thank's everyone

I've towed my rally car back about 20 miles from when the gearbox exploded using my Mum's Felicia Diesel estate - acceleration was no problem, but the brakes were a bit marginal (and yes, I know this was over weight - the car alone is 968Kg), and that was all flat stuff (between the exit from the stage of doom and my hours) - anything hilly would have required a fair bit of care!

I wouldn't say it's out... just need a nice small one.

Something like this:

freedom caravan on eBay (end time 17-Nov-09 16:23:24 GMT)

Weighing in at 620KG it would be manageable with the felly. I think any bigger than this and you're going to be struggling really.

Also you would need to make sure the rear suspension is in good working order and probably fit some bigger bump stops to stop the suspension bottoming out on bumps.

I would really be looking at a trailer tent though TBH. Like I say I think air resistance and just the sheer size of a caravan behind a small, light, and pretty low powered car like the felly isn't ideal. I guess that's why cars like the superb are badged as such good towing cars and not the felicia! :P

I have thought about this myself and would either love a little caravan like I posted or a trailer tent. Probably as a little project to get it looking nice etc and to take away on short weekend trips etc.

And a good run up to get up it!

Was the trailer braked then? Cos if not then that is a bit dodgy... leaving the brakes on the already heavy derv felly to deal with an extra tonne of weight almost!

Phil

Gosh, that's a dinky caravan. Reason we would like something else is because we have just got back from our first camping trip in a tent and the condensation was horrendous. The tent was good in the rain and stood up to the wind but we still got wet and everything was damp.

Guessing it's not double walled then?!

Yeh agree it would be nice to have a bit more comfort on camping trips and having a dinky little van to pull around and park up would be nice.

Depends what your budget is really?

You already got a towbar fitted?

Phil

No, no car is able to tow a caravan.

Or, at least... should not be allowed to

Lol.. agree a little bit.

I think if people towing caravans were a little more courteous it wouldn't be much of a problem.

When we last went to Germany we were overtaken on the motorway by a 4x4 towing a pretty big caravan... I wouldn't mind but we were doing 80!!!!

I think with one of these dinky caravan's then you're not going to annoy people too much as you won't be that long and they are norrower and easy to see round etc.

Some of them you don't even need towing mirrors they're that narrow! lol

At the end of the day everyone is entitled to use the road and we're all just trying to get somewhere.

The trailer's brakes are poor, so the Fel was doing most of the work. I know it was dodgy, but in the mood I was in (having just retired after 4 stage miles, on a perfect day with the stages in mint condition, and having had the most expensive single part on the car fail), I wasn't that bothered, I just wanted to get the old shed home and sulk!

As for going up hills, I don't think it would have been a problem, it was quite nippy; so much so that I really had to take care not to go too fast everywhere!

Yeh they're not actually that underpowered are felly's just with a lot of weight being towed and it being driveable up hills and long gradiants etc is where it struggles.

I have had a car full a few times consisting of 5 fully grown adults inlcuding myself ranging from 6' to 6' 7" with a boot full of stuff and it will happily whizz along without batting an eye lid... It's the long hills on the motorway that are a killer especially in a 1.3!

Phil

Nope, just looking into things for next year.

Must admit , ours does not like hills at the best of times

Cool.

Well a towbar kit can be had for about £60 plus fitting unless you feel confident in fitting yourself.

I say go for it!

I have always had a vision of having a retro little caravan on the back of the felly with the optional surfboard carrier on the roof (yes, this was an O.E. part available for the felly) and going down to cornwall for a long weekend... sad vision I know...

Phil

my granddad used a 1.3spi fav silverline to tow a caravan all round europe.

Oh, make sure you get a Type Approved towbar, due to the age of your car - not sure if there are ones around which aren't (in fact I doubt there are now), but it's worth checking.

Whatever you do dont end up in this situation.

I have towed a caravan with a felicia 1.6 without too much trouble, my Octavia performs about that same - again a 1.6. The caravan I have is only light - about 650kg, and is 25 years old, but is good for cheap breaks away. Your best bet is to get something cheap (mine was £500 4 years ago), just to see what you think of caravanning and towing.

I really hate people who don't pull over when towing a caravan - if anyone gets stuck behind me I try and get in and let them past. Believe me I know there is nothing worse than being stuck behind them on some of the roads where I live. If you do get one, make sure your considerate and pull over!
