Extra 40lb/ft worth it?

Featured Replies

I've been searching about on this for some time now and it appears that their are 2 well established routes;

1) Generic remap up to the stock clutch limited 300lb/ft figures

2) Upgrade clutch then custom remap up to 340lb/ft+

What I was wondering was, is the extra 40lb/ft really that more noticeable/better, or is the advantage more to do with not having to worry about clutch slipping etc problems in the future?

Also, going with option two, does the extra mapping increase the chances of turbo wear and incidence of turbo failures?

Thanks in advance..!

i went down the clutch route mate. its good knowin you wont bugger up your clutch and the more torque the better in my eyes. i would be interested to here off someone who has drove both a limeted torque vrs and one with the updated clutch.

Yeh I guess as well if your clutch begins to slip you replace it with a better one but then have a map that is still limited to 300lb/ft so would then need remapping...

How many miles have you had yours done for, any turbo problems? I can't imagine what it'd be like in the wet haha?

yeah it spins alot in the wet. done 15k now since the map and all is well.just let it warm up and cool down propper.

I've got a stage 1, made 173bhp and 300lbs of torque. On the original clutch 91,000 miles. 2nd flywheel though (well before map) Had on for about 2,000 miles and it still puts a smile on my face, no slip whatsoever.

Obviously a custom map with new clutch is going to generate even more power and yes it would be nice, but at the moment I dont see the point unless my clutch goes. If it goes it goes, no point buying just incase. Otherwise you may aswell, buy another turbo, clutch, flywheel, brakes, etc.

Turbo's go if its mapped or not, remaps dont ruin turbo's, decat's do. I know people who have been through 2-3 turbo's, because they dont get used, sit at 1,500 rpm constantly.

Dont boot it below 2k, and you shouldnt have any problems, but yes traction control does come in handy in the wet. Lol, as I found on the way into work this morning. :)

, remaps dont ruin turbo's, decat's do.

wrong, people who have no clue ruin turbo's,make sure its warm before booting and keep it ticking over for a minute or 2 after a hard run, turbo will last de catted or not if these simple rules are aplied

yes i agree too. you defo need to look after your turbo and know how too!!

How many people have said on here that after the decats turbo's have gone caput...Quite a few??

Something along the lines of back pressure??? Come on big boys, correct me.

Could you please show me how much back pressure the KKK turbo needs on the PD130? Then show me logs of back pressure with de-cat and without to back up your claim?

So anyone with a de-cat the turbo will blow.... opppps ive had mine on for 3 years now... any minute now my turbo will blow.... wait for it... wait for it...

So is the turbo not more at risk with a remap? I imagined because of the higher boost pressures that it would put more strain on the turbo?

Thats not a straight answer reply im afriad, yes with more boost running that could have a negative effect, but id say mis-use of a standard car, with standard boost would be alot worst than taking care of a mapped car.

As bad as this sounds, I view turbo's as a wear and tear item, as well they are! They dont last forever, infact nothing does, but turbo's are a moving part, moving parts break sooner or later. Sometimes its sooner due to miss use, other times its not driver fault, its manufacted wrongly.

Come on big boys, correct me.

oooh errrrr

any other verdicts on weather people thnk the extra 40 lbs/ft torque is worth it?

Interestingly on this subject I emailed one remapping company asking about what sort of figures they would be happy remapping to and they said around 170bhp and 270lb/ft because they could remap up to 320lb/ft+ however such torque in such a small car would be "un-insurable" in the wet...

No mention was given to clutch and other parts being limited, more emphasis was made of insurance considerations lol, thought it somewhat strange...

I take it with your PD226 you are running the standard kkk turbo??? I think not, it was problems with the standard kkk turbo.

Like I said, use the search and god knows how many people have had problems after De-cats. Hasnt happend to me personally because I dont have one.

I'm no mechanic, so going by what a lot of people have said on here. Touchy tonight aint we boys.

Back onto the subject, I dont think 40 lb/ft of torque is worth the extra ££££ for a new clutch kit. End of.

No your right, that isnt a standard KKK turbo I am running. However the standard KKK turbo I was running, well before my PD150 hybrid, seemed to manage fine with a DE-CAT.

You basing your argument on posts find here is flawed.

You link me to every post you can find of a diesel with a standard turbo turbo blowing up within 1 month of a de-cat.

I bet I can find more than still have a CAT on ;)

you're wrong. consider yourself corrected. HTH

Back on topic, anyone have any opinions?

Fair enough. Like I said i'm no mechanic. Thanks for the correction, was going by the many horror stories i've heard that's all.

Goldie Jon, what did you think of the whole P-Torque experience, would you recommend them? I also notice you have a pd160 and performance panel filter, did you have these done at the same time? Any performance benefit to them only if it just to reduce smoking i'm not too worried about that...

I've used P-Torque, and I was very impressed!

It's less about the 40lb/ft being worth it, and more about having a clutch fitted that is fully upto the task of coping with increased torque levels that comes with a remap, on a day-to-day basis. Just think of the extra torque as a bonus...

And anyway, I don't think I'd be running quite that level if you're running an OEM dual-mass flywheel anyway.

Steve

I've got 334lb of torque thru a standard gearbox and DMF. Been running this since March, don't have any problems with it, but then I don't boot it below 2000rpm and never boot it in 6th.

Hi Boots.

I couldn't recommend P-Torque enough. Will did a great job on mine. Very friendly and would hesitate using him again. The map is very smooth, it completely transformed my car. There isnt as much kick as the standard map, but you feel much more power at about 3k all the way up to 4.5. Top gear DVD's whilst you wait too, cant be bad.

I put the Green Cotton and PD160 on about 2 months before. with the map it helps it breath a bit better, and it provides better figures, not by much though. I didnt really notice the difference, bar it being a louder. It is a must though. Most people will agree with me there. :)

Yes it would be nice to have the extra 40 lb/ft, just think is it worth it, you may aswell spend that money on brakes/suspension. My clutch is fine, still had no issues. made 300 lb/ft, which in my eyes is more than enough.

Also I do get a bit of black smoke when giving it some, I quite like it.
