Rattling Exhaust from Cold (engine end) vRS

Featured Replies

Just started yesterday, will jack it up over the weekend see if the exhaust has come loose or anything, but as it rattles from cold then goes when warm is this a sign the Catalytic converter is fluffed? :( the car has done 136k

This going to be expensive? :thumbdwn:

May not be the cat could be just the rear box? As running on cold the car is running fast idle and could cause a resonance that is enough to rattle the rear box internals or that chrome surround on the rear box( that is known to come loose).

Mines now doing this, I "think" it's the heat sheild under the first box (cat???)

I hope lol

could be many things the heat shield around the cat as said, the flexi could be broken, or could be the centre exhaust bracket aswell as that can sound like its coming from the front, so yep get it up and have a look

Could be one of many things really. I've not heard of standard cats failing to be honest.

The top two exhaust rattles are...... drum roll please!

-Weld holding centre exhaust mount rusts, and becomes detached. Causing the pipe to rattle against the mount. Easy to weld back on. Can be diagnosed visually or by giving the exhaust a good hard bang with your hand.

-Cat heat sheild. Rattles due to one or more of the press fasteners falling off. Either replace the press fasteners, or remove the head shield.

Thats slightly good news then that it might NOT be cat, just thought if was a shield or something lose the noise wouldn't go, but as you say idle could cause anything lose to 'wobble'

There has been a back box rattle for a while Bowders, this does sound in a different place, will have a lookski at the w/e do a CO test.

My mate VRS has the rear box rattle and god how he puts up with that i don't know. Drive me mad.

my money is on the heat shield on the cat , as mine did it when cold removed it and now sorted

Another vote for the centre mount - fixed mine with two large jubilee clips. 50k miles later, and all is still good.

My center mount also broke, took 2 minutes welding to fix.

I had my centre fixed about 2 years ago, so I it ain't that on mine lol
