New low-cost no frills Skoda car?

Featured Replies

Well Porsche have the Boxter, so why not

All the VAG marques will be building a version of the VW up! concept city car, since the smallest/cheapest cars in the range are either too big (Fabia, Ibiza, A3) or are Brazillian-built lumps of unentertaining **** (Fox).

Can anyone say MK I Octy, which IIRC they are still building for certain market.

I'm sure they could cheapen that up a bit.

Im sure the MK1 is still being sold here as taxi's seen a few 09 plates about :)

It's not exactly that low cost

The model would also be more expensive and of higher specification than the cut-price Logan which retails from 7,300 euros (AUD$12,000).

But it would be welcome to see a range of cheap to buy/fix and maintain new cars out there.

There are a great multitude of people who just want a cheap no frills local runabout,, just look at the numbers of small Hyundis Kias etc. that have been sold recently. A big bonus for them is there is a long warranty. I know a few people who are happy with a £5 K to £6 K car with no A/C, prestige badge and don't handle very well. A no frills Skoda would fit in well with this segment.

At the end of the day I was introduced to VAG as having four definite markets covered.

Audi - Prestige

Seat - Sport

VW - Average / please all / bland

Skoda - Budget

These have been somewhat mixed up as Skoda is no longer that cheap as they also try to improve brand image. Seat is no longer that sporty as the others have recognised a need for performance cars within the range.

Why not launch a range of budget cars to fight it out with Hyundai and Kia? They are making big profits from their range but despite the 5 and even 7 year warranties people are still dubious. If we knew that Hyundai were German built by VW but still at the same price I'm sure people would go for it.

As for using the Skoda badge I think Skoda have gone too far towards being a reputable company to go back to being cheap and cheerful. Maybe it's time for a new brand fom VAG to fill the only part of the market they don't currently contest in.
