Buying a Fabia Changes to VAG-COM

Featured Replies

Hi,

I'm taking delivery of would you believe another 'Black Magic' Fabia vRS brand new. I'm interested to know what will be enabled/disabled with VAG-COM as standard and what I should generally turn on because it's a good feature to have. I am not a company car driver so I dont care about the EGR Valve so I think that'll be the first thing I change, anything else, and can my dealer do it and at what cost?

Thanks, Chris.

Do a search for 'intelligent indicators' this thread covers a bit about what can be done with a VAG-COM, I am sure there are other threads aswell HTH :)

Not sure what standard set up is as it may vary dealer to dealer, but check out my VAG-COM FAQ I did here, although I no longer have permission to view it

Tho i dont think intelligent indicators can actually be controlled fromvagcom

IIRC the thread started by someone saying they have just discoverd there intelligent indicators (clicking 3 times) and then it moved on to about VAG-COM and had some usefull info on there about it

But you are correct the intelligent indicators are to do with a newer ECU, so if you havent got it, you wont get it

Forgive me for my ignorance but what is an EGR valve ?

Had a look at this thread, there are 2 theories which I hope Ross maybe able to help with.

The principle is the some of the exhaust gases are recirculated through the intake manifold to reduce emissions.

1. This may cause the oil deposits that are generated from the exhaust fumes to eventually clog up the intercooler as it will be circulated through it and generally soot up the intake manifold.

2. The oily residue may help to lubricate the inlet side of the turbo so turning this off may stop important lubrication getting to the turbo inlet port, but on a turbo there are oil seals to stop this happening so why you need to lubricate this in the first place I have no idea.

So you are left with a dilemma.

Turn of the EGR valve and reduce soot in the inlet manifold but you then run the risk of not lubricating the inlet side of the turbo (Does that really matter) or leave the EGR on and run the risk of sooting up the intercooler thus reducing it's efficiency ?

BTW the EGR can be turned off Via Vagcom.

I will see if Ross can comment on this first.

EGR effectively when in opertaion reduces your engine capacity by 20% by re burning spent exhaust gasses. As for the oil residue in the system this is caused by the engine breather not EGR, the EGR gas is circulated from the exhaust straight into the inlet manifold via the EGR valve, so doesnt actually involve the turbo itself.

But EGR only operates in certain conditions anyhow, so you may or may not notice it much. I know its possible to adapt the EGR to a lesser extent but I wasnt aware it was possible to turn it off completely. But have a play if you have acess to VAG COM, you can allways adapt it back. It wont damage anything by lessening the adaption, it will just not be as it should be emission wise.

 Cheers Ross, it's good to have someone in the know.

Rooboy bring the Vagcom down to the meet Friday, I have a feeling I may need it :D
