Is this right oil

Featured Replies

Just had first annual service on 1.8TSi. I specially requested fully synthetic oil, because of the turbo.

On my invoice the oil provided just says 5W-40 VW Specific 4.7 litres.

Cost 37.13 + vat.

Is that fully synthetic? I thought it should be 0W-30.

Too cheap isn't it?

Fixed or Variable servicing, as each uses different oil.

It is fixed, and low average mileage. Say maximum 8000, and service every 12 months.

I particularly asked for fully synthetic because this forum advised it due to the engine having a turbo.

Having said that I no longer use high revs! I don't think I've even seen 4500 on the clock, through the gears.

The link to the VW spec oil list does not mention 5W-40 though.

I'm wondering if I should complain to the garage?

From the castrol web site:

Multigrades are easily recognized by the dual viscosity rating (i.e. 10W-30 where the 10W is the low temperature or winter designation and the 30 is the high temperature designation). It is the motor oil viscosity modifier additive that produces a thickening effect at high temperatures but is dormant at low temperatures.

Which viscosity grade is right for you?

SAE Viscosity Grade Motor Oil: 5W-30

Temperature Conditions: Below 0° F

Description: Provides excellent fuel economy and low temperature performance in most late-model automobiles. Especially recommended for new cars.

So 5W-40 should be at least equivalent. However, it available in both fully synthetic and semi synthetic so if you are concened a quick call to the garage should clear it up. As I said previously its the VW spec that important and confirms it the correct oil grade for your car.

Regarding the turbo issue, its claimed that variable servicing causes early turbo failure not the oil grade as far as I am aware.

Ask for the VW spec. 50x.xx and check your handbook.

That link doesn't seem to have a listing for the 1.8 TSI/TFSI (16 valve turbo, cam chain not cam belt) engine in the Octy II, only the 20V 1.8T and some older 1.8T (2001).

IIRC 1.8 TSIs are supposed to have 502.00 or 504.00 for fixed interval servicing, and 504.00 for variable interval servicing. I always recommend VW 504.00 as that suits almost all VAG petrol engines.

Note that all 504.00 approved oils are also approved for 507.00 (the diesel spec) and vice versa.

Fair enough. Drop Guy an email, or a PM on here - Opie Oils are a site sponsor.

What he said.

All you have to do is look for the VW Approval.

I was dubious about the Valvoline oil my dealer was offering. Asked to see the Tech Data Sheet & is said 504/507 Approved so I was happy. Didn't really care what the viscosity rating was.

Thanks guys - the invoice received does claim "VW Specific" so I guess it is okay - anyway, with my carpet slipper motoring these days I don't think it would be a problem. I assume the very high spec oil is particularly for protection at very high spec driving!!!!

Just make sure you give it a good thrash now and again to keep those turbo vanes from sticking :D

Just try getting Skoda to admit it then! ;)

WOT ! And I've just come off my Sussex Safer Roads driving course (smacks wrist) where I'm told I mustn't come out of third gear anywhere this side of Greenland?

Oh well....................if you INSIST.......................

WOT? Exactly! WoT in 3rd should be plenty to get the 'Safety' Camera partnerships excited again! :P

Well at £105 a throw we're certainly keeping them in Mars Bars.

the 5w40 oil you speak of will be quantum platinum oil which is fully synthetic, it meets VW 505 01 spec, most places use this now as it can be put in pretty much anything, this is the same as whats used in the pd engines on fixed servicing
