Smashed rear window and firework thrown in!

Featured Replies

I think I really hate bonfire nights now! Got up this morning and got into car with SWMBO to find that the rear passenger side window smashed in - then found a used firework on the back parcel shelf. Can only thank God that the firework didn't set the whole car on fire (shudder to think if the whole car went up in flames and the tank of diesel went up). Hope the idiots who did this realise how serious their actions could have been. Just spent the morning cleaning up and now off to Autoglass to get temporary cover in place before they come out to do a proper replacement tomorrow.

Now wondering whether to bother getting the seat covers and a few chips on the paint work sorted under insurance and pay the excess (already got £70 excees on glass). Anyway, rant over.

Hope Rememberance Sunday is better for the rest of you! When I think of those who have given their lives for peace in this country - I know that my troubles are pretty minor.

That is shocking.

Sorry to hear that :)

Total gits!!

No good toss pots....Hope they some day understand what pride and joy means to us....Then cut their hands off......I hate these a;';'holes!

a smith&wesson job me thinks.

Bad news! Hope they catch them - unlikely! :rotz:

Yes, no chance! Phoned police up to get a crime number and they said it wasn't even worth sending anyone out to have a look. The PC was quite apologetic but since nothing was stolen from the car there was no chance of forensics getting any prints. Anyway, Autoglass will be replacing the glass tomorrow - just hope they know how to get the door card out etc. and do a good job. Have had a good look at the damage - some stone chips where they threw a bunch of stones and there is some minor scorch marks from the firework on the rear cushion covers - look a bit like water marks. The rear parcel shelf is scorched where the firework finally ended up. No damage other than that - thank goodness. How I got away with so little damage I don't know. Now considering whether to just live with the seat cover marks and not bother with paying extra £80 excess to sort it out - could do without the extra expense!!!! Thanks to all who have replied with their sympathy! Much appreciated!

Sorry to hear :(

Sorry to hear...sucks, totally! :(

I don't hate bonfire night - I hate the scruffy, rampant, feral, little ***** who wreak havoc & wanton destruction for the sake of 20 seconds of what they call "having a laugh"!

+1

To the OP the problem with a full insurance claim is that you'll pay for it over and over again with higher premiums. Perhaps some after market seat covers could help & possibly some trimming over the rear shelf (e.g. speaker carpet)

Very frustrating none the less & I guess it could have been a lot lot worse!

Sorry to hear of the damage to your car. I don't know where the vehicle was parked, however, if it was on your drive then you may be able to claim on the vandalism section of your buildings section of your Home Insurance Policy. I am just grasping at straws really but you never know.

Sorry to hear your woes. A nice sense of perspective too  don’t know if I could be so thoughtful :o

Hope you didnt touch the firework, and instead called the Police.

The firework had already set off as I found the car with smashed window this morning and it happened last night some time. I actually thought I heard a car alarm go off last night but I was watching tv and didn't go to have a look - maybe was too complacent. As for the insurance going up that somebody mentioned earlier, the glass as a minimum I have to sort out, no way around this one. The seat covers I may leave as is as it doesn't look too bad and the stone chips I can touch up. As I mentioned above, I think I got off rather lightly in term sof damage inside the car due to the firework - fortunately it looks like a small one and ended up in the rear of the cabin. Bit wary now with the car still on the drive (too big to go in the garage). Still, life goes on and when you read the story of that woman who died in her house cos scroat put a firework through her letterbox, then you realise it could be real worse.

So was it an accident, or scroats breaking and throwing in?

If the latter, did you call the Police? If not, why not?

I would certainly have a go at claiming on your home insurance (buildings section)

Missed that! :o

I agree, I'm not happy about the calls to ban fireworks as I used to enjoy buying them myself when I was a kid but we didn't use them to cause any vandalism and respected other peoples property. Whist I don't support the calls to ban them the kids who get up to such tricks are going the right way to get them banned as people will say enough is enough. Maybe you can console yourself with the fact that the ones who do this sort of thing will unlikely to have anything they desire themselves and will always be jealous of others.

Hopefully you can minimise the cost of repairing the damage to just the excess on your glass cover and the cost of replacing the rear parcel shelf which I wouldn't think would be too much. Possibly the marks on the seat covers will look better when cleaned and be something you can live with. I don't know if it's possible to touch them up with anything that will mask the damage.

Find out who they are and set one through their letterbox in paper wrapped in dog****. I wish you the best. Hope my parole officers not reading this! Honestly cant get my head round these people. Wiped off the earth, then again there is a now probably an EEC order against that now protecting the "innocent deprived criminal" bolks, I would like to see their corsa 12v twinport with a kipper up their tailpipe on a frosty monday morning.

Grin and Bear it, **** happens, promise you I know, but they really are not worth it, unless you get caught!

Find out who they are and set one through their letterbox

Although you're only joking, maybe not the best time to suggest that in light of the recent incident in the news :rotz:

Hope the OP gets it sorted ASAP through insurance policy or other - like you said, it's just as well it was a dead one

Take that on board. Not been watching the news recently. All getting too depressing. Hope the car gets fixed without too much hassle and it was just a off unlucky incident. Could have been much worse.

What colour are your seats, I have a set with charcoal edges and a light coloured insert in the middle you can have for free.

There are plenty Octys in the scrap yards you should be able to get another cover very cheaply, and the seats if mine are not the same as yours, if its just the base they come out in 30 seconds, if its the back only 2 mins to remove, you need a small torx bit or screwdriver in the middle where the backs join you will see a clamp undo this drop one side and gently wiggle the half you want to remove towards the centre

What a pain! It's any excuse really isn't it, and like you say - could have been a lot worse!

Hope you get everything sorted.

Steve

Back to the reference to rememberence sunday, if I was a ww2 veteran I think I would be truly horrified to see people do things like that, with the freedom they have that I had fought so hard for. It is disgusting and there is no excuse for such behaviour regardless of what the PC crowd say.

It's enough to make you wish we did live in such times where waste of spaces like that WOULD be caught and WOULD be brought to justice so as they never even think of doing something similar again.

Very sorry to hear that it happened at all, let alone to a brisky member, who on the whole, are festididious car keepers. Scum will always envy what they can never attain.

In my city (Canberra, Australia) they have ended up banning fireworks altogether, mainly due to idiots using them to blow stuff up and setting fire to anything flammable. It is a pity the irresponsible few screw things up for everyone else, but that's just how life is these days :(
