Need new phone but don't know what to ask for

Featured Replies

Ahhh, but have Tom and Lady E tried one? I have had an original 2G, a 3G and now a 3Gs and call quality has been fine, hell it even worked with the Skoda BT kit (unlike Nokia's finest)

I get through a full day on a battery, but I always have the laptop with me so can charge it when needed.

The only gripe I have with the iPhone is multi-tasking why can't it do it, it should be more than capable of it with the hardware it has. Cheesy or not, the app store is a big plus point, but I just don't get the gripes about call quality.... and I use mine for business so it's primary means of contact.

Honestly, it's no worse call wise than my previous N95, HTC trinity, SE910i or any other phone I can think of, and every car kit I have tried (and I have had a few) it has worked with flawlessly.

It's expensive, got the wrong badge on it for me but is a great piece of kit. Will the HTC turn out to be the iPhone killer like so many before it have been touted to be, I don't think so because once you get past touch flo it will be the same messy WM interface underneath it all (and I am a Windows fanboy to :))

I've nothing against the iphone but they do carry a price premium and I'd rather spend a bit less on a phone that isn't as pretty but still does all I need it to.

I'm not a luddite who can only deal with simple devices, I like a toy as much as the next man but I don't go all geeky over stuff, changing this and that, adding stuff, cracking software etc. I just want something to do the mainstream stuff straight out of the box. I don't need outlook syncing etc (ssssh but I don't even use an email client at home, I just use webmail) or permanently downloading apps.

I use nokia maps when I'm going somewhere new but I can look at the place I'm visiting at whilst at home, using wifi to download most of the info and just top up with whatever it needs over 3G when I'm out. Doesn't use much data anyway.

I’m thinking of resurrecting my old Nokia 702. life was a lot simpler in those days.

Still occasionally using an old Sendo M550. The smallest, lightest phone I ever had. The Android O/S is definitely worth a look. It keeps everything simple, but is versatile with it. After the Sendo I had WM5, then WM6.1 and neither were as elegantly integrated or as intuitive as the Android OS. Neither were as stable either.

I have only spoken once on an iphone and didn’t really think about evaluating the call quality as we were busy at work. But I have had a fiddle with one and agree the apps seem pretty swish. The new HTC HD2 seems to be possibly even swishier though as it has a much quicker processor and WinMo6.5 is supposed to be greatly improved OS.

Time will tell I guess. I do wish battery life was better on phones though (apparently the HTC will have an optional big battery available)

My 2p's worth in the direction of the HTC phones.

I'm running the HTC Hero / G2 on T-Mobile and I'm impressed so far - both with the phone (which is well built) and with the whole Android / Google thing - but I would also check out any newer phones they have.

I'm no expert but it seems to do most of what the Iphone does for quite a lot less

I’m told the Android HTC’s will sync flawlessly with Outlook, any ideas Andy?

On a related topic, HTC are releasing the HTC Dragon soon. It seems to be basically the HD2 but running Android

I have mine syncing with my Gmail account - full updates of email and contacts.

It also picks up my work email (btconnect) and old personal email (btopenworld) via POP3 email servers - its not true push email like a Backberry but its set to check for them every 15 mins which is often enough for me!

Not sure about Outlook sorry - there is an option to choose "Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync" but I have no idea what that is!

Internet browsing is fine, and it also a nice little Twitter app which is proving vey useful for me - I watch a lot of non-league football and many of the clubs at our level are now tweeting live scores from their games.

Not sure about the blade, but the Samsung Jet is very fast.

You map the phone how you want, and is more like the iphone. Worth a try in store.

I don’t use Gmail and I am not sure if it is the right thing for me owing to the very large number of contacts and complicated diary that I keep. Admittedly a lot of this is because I am too lazy to clean out my Outlook stuff :D

I took the plunge a few months ago.

It meant a major tidy up of my Outlook address book and the need to combine it with my telephone contacts (done when I had a Nokia using their software) but this was then easy enough to export to Gmail and onto the HTC when I got it.

I dropped Outlook and have not looked back. Google suite integrates with the phone and automatically synchronises everything I input from the phone or PC via its 3G data connection (in similar style to Blackberry). The phone has never been connected to the PC via a cable. It is simpler than WM for sure. Importing my Outlook stuff was a couple of minutes of simple work. Basically exported outlook contacts and appointments, then imported into my Google account on the relevant web page. Within a couple of minutes my phone received the data and it has been good to go ever since.

Having read a few of Gmails limitations, I think it would not be quite what I need sadly. :(

Sound like Blackberry would suit you better.

I currently have 3 active email accounts which are used mainly for work and about 500+ contacts (phone numbers, addresses, email address etc). WiMo suits these needs perfectly, at least once I have figured out how to set the accounts up (a real pain as 2 of the accounts wont auto configure). Blackberrys look quite good for all this stuff, but I use GPS/goggle maps a bit as I get lost easily and wifi and a decent camera are also pretty important. I keep coming back to WiMo being the best option for me. I am also a bit scared of adopting a whole new OS and finding I can’t access certain accounts easily, as in my experience the phone providers are reticent to say the least when you ask them how to set up an account that isn’t one of theirs and refer you to the ISP who are equally reticent.

God I hate technology!!!!!!!!!!!

You see, I don't need any of this geeky.techie and having spoken to my brother who has a touch pro, WinMo shouldn't cause me too many problems as I won't delving too far into it.

The rule of thumb my 2 contract friend gives me is that you want you're phone to be worth almost as much on the open market as your contract. So the £30pm (18 mth) contract (£540) for a £280 HTC Tattoo is not a good deal.

So still looking at the other HTC offers from Vodafone.

swmbo went to see a friend of a friend who's a manager in an Orange shop and came back with some silly offer so no help there either.

And another thing, what's with 2 year contracts? 2 frigging years!

OT, but why mot push your domain through Google App's then you can use Gmail and retain your existing email address. I do this and then have the Exchange Sync on the iPhone set to use Gmail and I get push email, via Gmail, but with everything still appearing with my domain name.

It's worth pushing it through Google Apps just for the Gmail and Contact / calendar functionality. I know this is way off topic, but if I add a new contact to the iPhone, it syncs with google, then google syncs it with my Mac and Outlook on the PC along with appointments etc and the advantage of push email.

All the business functionality you could ever want or need, with all the entertainment available to the piephone / android OS's.

Blackberry is NOT the business tool people imagine it to be, the only time imho that a blackberry offers any benefits over another mobile platform ala Android or iPhone is when it's coupled with a BES (Blackberry Enterprise Server, not the dancing lunatic from the Happy Mondays)

I read somewhere that Gmail doesn’t do mass emailing lists. I receive and occasionally send these things.?

Google allows you to send to a maximum of 10 recipients at a time and has stringent rules about what happens if they bounce, etc. It's definitely not a platform to use for mailing lists (says he who is trying to maintain a database app that has been built to use it :( )

So does that mean if I am a recipient on a mailing list of say 40 people (a crew) I would receive it, but if I wanted to send to the same number I couldn’t?

The norm in the US.

Then you hear handset manufacturers saying how they're struggling. Not surprised when your client base has gone from 12 > 18 > 24 months between handsets.

Thank the great Apple, O2 and AT&T for this trend.

Today I went into a couple fo shops and just thought I can't be arsed with this. Messing about with daft phones, trying to broker a deal is like pulling teeth and then being stuck with that for 18 possibly 24 months.

So I've put my SIM into a SE J132 I bought from CW ages ago for £10. If I can last a few weeks with this trip back in time phone then I might jack the whole lot in and go basic.

I have had enough of technology to last me the rest of my life. Fed up with the bloomin stuff! :(

Bit of a volte-face, isn't that, Amanda? Only a few posts previously you were declaiming the virtues of contact synchronisation etc ... :)

I've lost my personal mobile - probably several months ago. I suppose I ought to try and find it, but motivation is hard to find.

.

:confused:The synchronisation will not be a problem as far as I can see

When it works, it is brilliant. I am fighting against every new bit of technology making subtle changes which eventually means you are working with a whole new system. This plus the fact that Orange aren’t doing the Touch Pro 2 any more and will never do the HD2, so I need to go to Vodafone and then I run into some of the problems I have mentioned earlier. Ie will Vodafone allow me to send Tiscali, Bt, Sky and Tinyworld emails through their servers.
