Need new phone but don't know what to ask for

Featured Replies

I'm sorry to post one of these threads (Not had a phone thread for, oo, days) but I need some new phone advice. I'm currently running a battered old Nokia N95. I spoke to Vodafone and got some crap offers back (HTC Tattoo/Samsung Blade/Nokia 5800) but as I don't know what phone I want/need its tricky to bargain with them properly. I'm not asking for too much and would take a less than top of the range phone if I could get the monthly payment down a bit but I don't have enough info yet.

All I need is something like the N95 but slightly better. Slicker on the internet for a start (fewer app. out of memory messages would be a good start), better battery life?, I find the gps/mapping useful although I don't run navigation on it, decent speaker function is handy to play songs for my son round the house and probably most of all it needs to be robust. The N95 has been dropped and all sorts, its battered, chipped and held together with sellotape but has never broken fully. With a toddler around a new phone needs to pretty tough.

But I don't really need the top end functionality or customisation available on today's equivalents to the N95 in 2007, I've never de-branded my N95 and something like an iphone would be wasted on me as I just wouldn't use it much as a music player or all those silly little applications.

I think I prefer Nokia as I'm used to the N95 but would consider a HTC as I know a few people with them but they look a little fragile. Deffo not Samsung as I find my wife's phone (U900 Soul) infuriating.

Open to suggestions.

My TyTn II is built like a brick out-house and although it is now 2 years old I think it means the current HTC Touch Pro2 version will also be well built. I have a friend with one and it has a brilliant screen (better than the iphone) and although it is resistive rather than capacitive, it works really well (I had a play with it). The keyboard is easily the best I have ever used and is way better than the HTCTyTnII keyboard, which is a fine piece of equipment in it’s own right. Oh and the battery life seems to be about 3 days for moderate use and 2 days for heavy use.

I actually wanted one, but Orange have stopped doing them.

But the new phone on the block is the HTC HD2 and it is the first Windows genuine iphone alternative. Slim, sexy (if a phone can be sexy?). Vodaphone are going to do this now and it looks to be free on a £30-ish monthly contract. It has a massive capacitive screen, good camera, multi-touch, slim as an iphone, plus all the usual benefits with windows 6.5. The only thing I have heard negative comments about, is it’s battery life, which is more iphone the Touch Pro2.

A friend has got a recent top of the range HTC but he's waiting for Voda to get the iphone and will be swapping when its released. (he actually runs 2 contracts so he can change over earlier if he sees a better phone )

I'm just not sure how it'll be once its dropped on the floor a few times, dribbled on, wedged under the fridge etc.

The new HTC HD2 is a genuine iphone alternative for the user that wants windows. It has all the usual GPS/wifi stuff too of course. I think it is release in the next few days on Vodafone.

Try

it is more than a little biased but interesting none the less.

Get the HTC Magic on vodafone mate, it is amazing. I have always had Nokias but they always freeze and stuff, I then had an LG viewty which was good but wanted one of these new smartphones so I can browse the internet and stuff easily and use fancy apps! Basically a cheaper not as snobby version of an iphone - but still just as good. It is exclusive to Vodafone, the deal I got as an upgrade over the phone was:

Free HTC Magic

600mins PM

Unlimited texts

Unlimited internet (ace!)

All for £25 a month, bargain I think. Only thing is I am on a 24 month contract but this phone will easily do me for that time, what more can they do with phones....?! I could of had it on an 18 monther but that was £30 a month so thought naaa.

It really is a great phone mate, looks nice and does loadsa things - Very reliable unlike Nokia, iphone too expensive and the rest like Samsung are pants like you said.

In conclusion GET ONE!!!

I went from a N95 to a T-Mobile MDA Compact V which is basically a HTC Touch Diamond 2 in a different outer casing. I really like it compared to the N95, and find the touch screen a doddle to use. Being a Windows Mobile based phone there are literally hundreds of free applications available to download. Currently running the just released official WM6.5 For HTC TD2, its even slicker now than it was with WM6.1. T-Mobile have yet to release the WM6.5 update, so I have had to fiddle a bit to get the update to load. It has all the usual features including GPS, Radio with RDS and 5mp Camera.

The tyranny of choice :(

Somethimes I think bugger it I just want a simple £30 phone on PAYG but then I think I like doing this, like doing that and need the internetz etc and before I know it I'm paying out £30 a month again and looking at top spec phones, dammit.

More people here are saying HTC HD2 or Touch Pro 2, great phones especially the HD2 with the big screen and iphone beating capabilities - But you will pay for this, probably £40 a month to start then it may start coming down as months go by. In your last post you mention simple and cheap but I guarantee that there will be many occassion you will think 'I wish I could go on the internet or do something fun and fancy on my phone' - You won't get that on a £30 PAYG phone (I'm sure you know that already!) The HTC Magic is great - look at on line reviews. I got mine about 2 months ago, it may be with the introduction of the HD2 it will come down in price more or it may have already! So the deal I got or something similar may be £20pm - I doubt you would spend much less than that pm on PAYG. Why not give Vod a call, or go somewhere like carphone warehouse as the larger stores have the physical phones working, not dummys so you can have a play - You will just have to tell the store asst to **** off!!!!! Best of luck!

Don’t why I bother sometimes

Blackberry...." end of "

Here is the link and the proof.

If you click around on the page you can see 18 month contracts as well as 24 month ones.

Just wish people read all the posts first before responding.

Thanks for your input, lots to take in and not really got the time to do it at this moment (catching up at work). I like the HTC phones but know little about them (about any really)

Blackberry...." end of "

But why????????????????????????????????? I really don't think I'm a blackberry person. I don't use my free minutes let alone do much emailing.

I wasn’t referring to your good self.

I like HTC WinMo (windows mobile OS) phones as I sync them to my Outlook calendar and contacts. It means that a new phone takes a couple of minutes to not only take my entire diary on board, but can load up the 500+ names, addresses, e-mail addresses and phone numbers stored on my pooter.

Plus whilst the phone is connected it not only is charging, I can drag and drop photos and the like from the phone to the pooter and vice versa (eg music files can be dragged into the phone and stored on it’s micro SD card for listening to later)

Traditionally WinMo phones have not run as slickly as the iphone or the new operating systems like Android etc, but with the new WinMo 6.5, the 1 ghz processor on the HTC HD2 and HTC’s user interface, the phone runs like a hot knife through butter.

Has anyone said the "i" word yet :) :) :) Current 3Gs knocks the bejesus out of any blackberry device

I would be looking at an Android based phone, maybe the HTC Hero or equivalent, that's the only other thing that floats my boat over and above the iPhone I currently have.

Check out my above link for a possible iphone beater. There are a several video reviews on the interweb of it. Certainly looks promising and a real alternative to the brilliant iphone.

Win Mo phones are alright as long as you don't suffer from fat finger syndrome (as some of my colleagues at work do).

Mind you as the newer ones (HD2) with capacitive screens may be better.

That link you posted does not include unlimited internet for the 25pm deal with the cheapest phone, bit pointless really if you are buying a smartphone!! If you want the same deal as I posted you will be paying £35pm and £90 for the phone - I imagine your dig was at me Lady Elanore??!!

This is what HTC-friend told me (I'm fat fingered) plus accidental phantom calls whilst its in your pocket.

I’ve had several smartphones and have never had much of a data issue. Vodafone and O2’s deals aren’t much behind the iphone data deal. Smartphones were originally for business users and not as much for the download/You tube fan, so I have really only wanted to download work email which occasionally contain a PDF doc.. There are a lot of deals with cash back and if you need more data you can always buy it if needed. If GPS is your thing then TomTom will save you running Google maps and the download inherent with this system.

The main trouble with the iphone it seems (according to the press, so a little pinch of salt is needed) is it isn't a brilliant telephone because of poorish call quality, even though it has set the standard for other applications for a couple of years.

I've never had any problems with the phone calling people while in your pocket as long as you either lock the screen or flick it to standby.

With any Win Mo phone once you get past the surface layer that has been customised by HTC or whoever there can be quite a few small icons and buttons to try and press. Though one advantage of the touch pro 2 is a proper keyboard (I've got the earlier touch pro) which makes life a lot easier.

Several of my colleagues are not keen on Win Mo phones because of this, though mainly it's because they have fat fingers and their arms aren't long enough :D

And who buys an iphone for call quality?

Or battery life:(

Only been up to Window Mobile 6.1 and that was poor. Currently on an Android phone and as a general purpose O/S, it gives me all the functionality of diary contacts and email (all linked into Google Calender / Contacts / Mail account) that I could need. It is intuitive and unlike WM 6.1, all the useful stuff talks to all the other useful stuff.

If I wanted more business functionality than I have, it would have to be Blackberry. Cannot see me going back to Windows any time soon.

Chris

I’m thinking of resurrecting my old Nokia 702. life was a lot simpler in those days.
