Peugeot axe GTI brand

Featured Replies

Seems they will no longer be making hot hatches full stop. :(

I know they haven't made a good one in years, the 306 being the last good GTi they made, but it seems a shame to lose the brand. The 205 is probably the 2nd most iconic GTI ever built after the Golf, with the 106 and 306 being great fun while they were available.

Hmmm, seems a shame - but as you say, they've not exactly been on form in recent years. Well, that's about a decade now, since the 306 GTi-6 and Rallye! :eek:

So they've probably thought that if they can't get it right in that amount of time, and with several models coming and going in that time, that they might as well give it up as a bad job!

Steve

Tbh it isn't any wonder. They're selling the GTi 175 for 15k new and they're utter rubbish! Been in one round a track, only good thing of it was the handling. A standard Fiesta ST beats them as does many other hot hatches on the road

For 15k i'd rather have a Corsa VXR at 189bhp or a Clio RS200 or i'd just buy a Fiesta ST and supercharge it with the change left over

I work for Peugeot and since the GTi 175 launched in 2007 i think we've had 6 in nearly 3 years! And most of them have been contract hire's i.e. someones company car. So it's not a big seller at all!

Roll on the RCZ Coupe, they are simply stunning imo

They seriously cheapened the badge when they stuck it on the 207 diesel recently. A 110bhp diesel being given the gti badge just took the mickey.

They never put the GTi badge on the diesels. The only true 207 wearing the badge is the GTi 175

If theirs a GTi badge on a 207/308 90/110bhp diesel it's been added afterwards. The diesels are GT branded

Amazing isn't it. Peugeot used to build the best FWD chassis for their GTi's. Nowadays they are just run of the mill :(

Pity really, as i absolutely loved my 106GTi, fantastic car.

They never did.

GTI = Hot Petrol

DTurbo = `Hot` Dervs

I'm thinking that if the GTI is gone, does that mean Peugot is pulling out of racing/rallying?

peugeot have got it wrong again, they should have axed the entire peugeot brand

:iagree:

I do think the 206 GTI 180 was a peach though.

Sorry it was the GT Diesel I was thinking of. Still when you have a GTi brand to then make a GT as well is bound to confuse people!!

What like VW and the Golf ? :D

VW done the GT TDi and their new ones are GTD

Nope still wide.

Pug = GTI/DTurbo

VW = GTI/GT (Petrol) GT TDI (Derv)

It's a shame as they have basically got into making cars that don't handle well and IMHO that is a huge mistake since their reputation was built on it.

As to whether the coupe concept will win through is another matter, but killing the GTI is a shame, but nothing that can't be undone should they ever come up with a peach and want to.

Not quite

The VW derv is GTD not GT TDI (Golf GTI : Volkswagen UK)

They will come out with another sporty brand acronym like SRT or VSR or maybe SHI__

The old ones were GT TDI the mk6's come under the GT name.

None of the current range of Peugeot diesels bare the DTurbo name. They are badged HDi GT.

How about Peugeot Injection System Sport?

Pug DID put a GTI badge on a diesel car.

The 206 top spec diesel was known as the GTI HDI, and the model below it was the Sport. I took both for a test drive 2 years ago when the ex wanted one, and she settled for a Sport simply because the GTI wasn't worth the extra money spec wise, and the engine was the same (1.6 16v HDI 110bhp).

But even the Petrol GTI's of late have been pretty lame in comparison to other brands offerings.

Pug ALWAYS seem to offer less power than rivals, and over price their cars.

IMO its not a sad day at all, it just means that there will be less 'wannabe' hot hatches on the road with the well known GTI badge that they never really earned.

I was thinking MK IV golf, which had the PD 150 as a GT TDI.

Saying that, IIRC most of the MK IV GTI's were badged over here as that and sold as something else in Europe.

The Golk MK IV was a tough one to get right.

I know people who had them badged as just a GTI, but also seen TDI on them, and a few GT TDI... Unless you could see smoke coming from them, or heard the engine ticking over, it was nearly impossible to tell if they were petrol or diesel, and if they were the 180/150 or 130.

The latest 207 GTi had the same engine as the current Mini Cooper S, as this 1.6T was co-developed between Mini/BMW and PSA....

It's a cracking engine in the MCS, and frugal too. So not as if that was down on power; they're usually healthily above the stated power output in Minis when they're tested. It was just the rest of the package that let it down.

PSA have been sharing engines with BMW and Ford recently, and although the engines have been pretty good, they could be used in better chassis than anything Pug have provided.

They either make a great car but stick a feeble engine in, or get a great engine and let it down everywhere else.

Yeah, the Mk4 2.0 8v "GTI" was badged as a Highline everywhere else :thumbup:

Yup, the latest MCS and 207 GTi are perfect examples really. Supposed to be 'direct' competitors but you don't really tend to consider them in the same terms do you?! :eek:
