Second Hand Prices

Featured Replies

Hi,

Is it me or are dealers taking the proverbial, I have found a Superb 140 Auto with 7000 miles on the clock for £19675.00, now if I add VAT to that price at 15% it costs £22626.00.

The list price on that car is only £23480, so for a car that's a year old I would be saving £853.00, well sort of.

My point is whilst the car may 'only' be £19675 to buy today the initial tax hit taken by the original owner has not been taken into account, the dealers are certainly quick enough to point out the VAT aspect of the purchase when you want a P/X price.

So the dealer offers a low P/X price because of the VAT element, then totally disregards it when they put it on the forecourt.

Or am I just being stupid?

Andy

No you're basically right and should leave the car on the forecourt.

Sister in law crashed her Ford Ka the other day and it looks like it may get written off. As she has no taste in cars I was looking at the Hyundai i10 for her. List for the top spec one is £8500, DTD will do one for £8100 ish.

Had a look on autotrader and there's a couple pre reg or nearly new ones for £9300!

Yep, there's certainly some crazy things going on out there. Market doesn't seem to know whether it's coming or going!

Shop around, always.

I was thinking of a Focus RS so popped to see what my local Ford dealer had and give good look over. He showed me one & went on about discounts - "no, sir, most anyone will give you is £700 off list. Have a look at my second hand, most you get off new is £2,500"

Popped home & did quick 'Drive the Deal' search - they were offering 20% (£4,500+) off!

The used car price will already have the VAT added, used cars are always listed with VAT included as you have to pay it anyway. Only commercial vehicles are listed exc. vat, so the price you will pay for the used superb is £19675.00, saving of nearly 4K off new.
