[Help] v. badly bubble paint on rear spoiler (Fabia vRS 04)

Featured Replies

I'll post pics up later when I'm home, but..

can anyone help with suggestions on how to repair the spoiler?

I've been away for the past week, the car has been kept in a dry garage.

I got back and noticed that the rear spoiler has developed massive bubbling in the middle of the spoiler (pic to follow).

I've phoned a local north west reputable dealer to ask about warrenty claim on the rear spoiler. (Alex Lawrie).

The chap was extremely helpful about it, but said that since I didn't have full service history (cambelt service carried out at Awesome), that the warrenty claim was probably not going to turn out in my favour.

They said that it's normally 6 years paint warrent on metal body work (I've read on here that it's 10...), but since the spoiler isn't metal then it's probably not covered.

Help :(

The chap said to email him with the pic, so he can judge (for what it's worth), and to phone Skoda customer services direct for another opinion.

I was wondering if this friendly forum has any hand tips?

If it comes down to it and I have top remove the spoiler and strip+sand+paint+laquer it then so be it, but I'd like as much help first before I start down that road.

Thanks

Bubbling Fuey

Sorry to hear that.. The previous owner of mine had the aerial incorrectly adjusted

and it scratched the paint off the spoiler in the middle quite badly...

Briskoda Top Tip!!

If you have a VRS Fabia, ensure the aerial is set as upright as possible

(Yes it is adjustable.) Otherwise the spirally outer texture of it will scratch the bejeezus

out of the spoiler when the tailgate is fully opened. I believe the spoiler is glued on so any repairs/painting will probably have to be done "on car". If you've noticed yours scraping the spoiler it can probably be adjusted.

Hope to help.

 Mine has a plastic coating in the little groove where the aerial goes when the boot's open - was this perhaps taken off unwittingly, or was it just a post-facelift addition that not everyone has?

Mine is scratched despite the little sticker thingy in the groove.

I have a sharkfin that I bought from MikeSM56 that will be going on mine

when the weather improves... My furby is off to the paintshop as soon as funds allow.

I'll get my spoiler sorted then...:thumbup::thumbup:

I don't fancy spraying with the spoiler in situ but i'll make that decision after I've heard back from the peeps at Alex Lawrie. I'm guessing it's fat chance, or no-chance of a warranty claim, but if you don't ask.....

Cheers !

Mine too, but it's nothing a six-monthly coat of black Turtle Wax doesn't fix! :)

It looks like the spoiler has had paint in the past from the pics. My spoiler has a lovely corner devoid of laquer.. local bodyshop want £150 to spray it all (in situ i think) so its not on my list of things to do before christmas.

mine did that, it will get a LOT worse within the next few weeks, water gets inside it and it just goes from there, you wont see xmas before it looks a proper mess

get it done asap

yep, thats how mine started, i'm just not that fastidious with the wax and polish

isn't it a 5 year paint warrentyl from Skoda???? dont ask you dont get.

Hm, might have to get a hair dryer on it to dry it out, then seal it as much as I can till I can deal with it properly.

I've got some Auto Glym Sealent, and then apply loads of nxtgen wax.

No reply from the dealer yet, but he said over the phone that it's 6 year paint warranty on painted metal and insisted that the car has to have full skoda service history, which is hasn't (cambelt @ Awesome)

hey ho.

Yea, mine's getting on for that too....

Can't wait for the cold weather and the frosts to start...be peeling it off then....ha

Rubbish...... as long as it is serviced at a VAT registerd guarage using VAG parts it is coverd.

Awesome probly did a better job as well as the last time i took mine to a dealer they put the wrong Oil in it.

I thought it was 3 years on paint, 10 years on bodywork? The EU Block Exemption Rules make warranty terms forcing all servicing to be done at a franchised dealer invalid.

I'll phone skoda customer line direct to see what they say.

I'd prefer to take it to alex lawrie because of their reviews (even if they might have some facts wrong on how to handle paint defects)

I'll definitely use the above information though.

i think where its been serviced is irrelevant, doesn't the car have to have a body and paint inspection yearly for it to be covered under the terms of the warranty

My brother worked for AL for a while and I've so far bought 3 cars and had various dealings with them and they have always been happy to help - if you don't get any joy from the tech dept. speak with Alex (sales assistant) or Jackie (manager) who should be able to help you further.

The laquer on my 04 VRS roof spoiler is pealing off. The garage has told me because they will have to remove the plastic ariel protector they will also have to re-laquer under the spoiler aswell. It's gone in today but is gonna set me back about £170 to sort it, ouch.

Mines just started to go in the last week :/

mine went a while ago - best quote i've had was £200 as they feel the spoiler needs to be removed to check the lacquer underneath, which is fair I suppose. Especially as they're likely to remove paint from the bootlid too, which they will have to fix FOC.

Iwas under the impression that the paint warranty was for 10 years, but only on metal. I guess I will find out when I tackle skoda at some point though, as I have the start of a paint bubble in the recess where the rear numberplate goes....

PL

I noticed last week that the laquer has started to bubble and the top of the spoiler has lost its gloss look aswell. It looks like a bad respray, which is quite weird as i have had the car since new,2004 model. Its has a full skoda history done by alex lawrie and its booked in for the end of the month,so i will asking them to look at it....

Mine clear coat failed months ago. :(

Mine has looked a mess for a while too :( surely if the paint is OK underneath it could just be prepared and lacquered with no need for more paint?

Ok I took my Vrs with pealing roof spoiler to chips away on saturday morning and they had a nightmare lol. The first coat of paint reacted so they had to rub it down and respray it twice. They managed to get it perfect without having to remove the spoiler in the end but it had to stay with them over night. I only paid £144 vat included, very resonable. The colour match is spot on considering its silver and over all I am very pleased. I think at that branch they will quote other people higher next time though because of the grief they had :(. The only thing is I dont have a ariel strip protector anymore. Time for a bee sting me thinks. I will try to upload some snaps of the spoiler as it looks like new now an did not cost the earth to repair. Just can't clean it for three days now.
