Facelift road noise

Featured Replies

Having moved from a pre-facelift petrol vrs hatch to a facelift diesel vrs estate, I've noticed the new car seems to suffer with more road noise. Anyone else noticed this?

As part of the weight saving did they reduce the sound insulation?! I'm hoping its the tyres Continental SportContact 2.

Anyone added extra sound insulation to their vrs?

yes i feel the same on my new FL Octavia 1.8tsi, i got yokohama decibel tires which are suppose to be silent & comfort tire, the new fl octavia does have alot of road noise even the suspension is noisy i feel:confused:

There have been other threads where this has been discussed, I'm hoping that when the tyres are changed there will be an improvement. I've got Goodyear Eagle NCT5's but I don't know how they comapare with others though.

I had a test run in a FL petrol vRS. It was a LOT noisier than my 2008 vRS TFSI. I suspect there has been a considerable reduction in soundproofing. I also noticed that the gearchange felt less precise, so there must have been some changes to the 'box/linkage. Both cars (i.e. mine and the FL I drove) were fitted with the same tyres (Conti SportContact 2) so I don't think the tyres are a major issue.

wierdly I feel the opposite!...my new fl vrs is much quieter than my old one!

yes the engine is quieter but what about road noise? is it quieter then pre facelift??

SWMBO finds the road noise unpleasantly loud. Michelin Pilot Premacy/Primacy.

I agree - moved from a PD to a CR & have Dunlops fitted now as opposed to Continentals

Will be a bit miffed if they have reduced the sound insulation. Engine noise seems to be reasonably well suppressed, a slight drone at 80 but otherwise its fine. It seems to be just the noise of the road coming in. The road noise is the only thing I can fault with the car, just wish it wasn't so loud.

Anyone know anything about fitting extra sound insulation? Would it be a case of stripping the interior? (which I really dont fancy). Or would something under the boot mat and something lining the wheel arches (from the outside) do?

You put some layers of dynamat extreme on the boot floor, the spare tyre well and under the rear bench and it will be much improved.

It might be that if the FL no longer has a spare tyre, then the noise that was damped out by the spare in the well is now back and required damping.

Mine does have the spare wheel so that could have something to do with it. Also, if I remember correctly, the petrol cars don't have the bonnet soundproofing that the diesel ones do! Every little helps?

I've got a proper spare wheel (wouldn't be without).

Will have to look in to the sound damping stuff. Any idea what sort of cost we're looking at to do the bits mentioned?

Had my Octavia Mk II estate (very) professionally done as soon as I bought it in 2006 - soundproofinge everywhere possible - cost £350 plus another £60 for a lead-weighted mat which drapes over the engine. All well worth it in my opinion; only road noise now intrudes when driving in the UK and on smooth continental surfaces it's quiet as can be.

Can't speak for the facelifted model, but car companies do like to shave pennies off their production costs if they think the customer won't notice - as MB did in the '90s, with disastrous results.

IIRC it was 2 or 3 roles, so about £30-50 if you DIY depending on your supplier.

I think mine may be getting quieter, but it could be:-

a) the recent wet weather conditions

B) I'm becoming used to it.

c) I'm gradually going deaf.

d) I'm 'collecting' more 'stuff' in the boot.

e) the suspension parts and tyres are softening up with more use.

Have a '06 VRS and find the road noise fairly bad. Have federal tyres which were a freebe from the dealer so was hoping if i changed them it would get better. But there's a few complaints on here using different tyres so not sure, Apart from stripping out the car to sound proof it is there any other options?

Strewth..I dont like this thread, having just ordered a FL CR170.

Some dynamat in the boot?

Would that be enough?

What about the wheel arches?

There is likely to be more road noise with the estate than the hatch.

I think that my FL vRS is quieter overall.

Engine noise definitely less; Wind noise definitely less; Road noise almost definitely less (on Dunlops).
