Winter screenwash - worth being aware of?

Featured Replies

Just stumbled across this on honestjohn, about the Octavia II:

In winter, must only use Skoda approved screenwash, otherwise rear screenwash pipes can pop off filling spare wheel well with washer fluid. Skoda dealers often want £100 to fix even when car is under warranty.

Thought it might be worth a mention in case anyone's had problems?

Did not know this, what screen was h do Skoda approve then? Any suggestions?

As the jets are different (looked for a translation and found fan nozzle?) it should be screenwash suitable for these. If suitable it doesnt clog the jets.

I have used the Halfords stuff for years and never had a problem....

I knew that Skoda would not repair blocked fan jets under warranty if they found non VAG screen-wash in the system. I, like Len, use Halfords double concentrated screen wash (at winter dilution) and have had no problems with it. If it gets really cold I add some IPA (IsoPropyl Alcohol) to the mix.

Mostly if suitable there will be a note on the bottle.

The halfords stuff may be fan jet suitable.

As I said, I have never had any problems with residue in the jets and we use in

in both our cars :)

My guess is the jets will only block if you live somewhere very dusty or the screen wash is mixed with dirty water or hard water. If you don't have antifreeze of some description in, it frozen jets will potentially cause tubing to pop open thanks to the increased system pressure from iced up nozzles. I throw in the Halfords premixed stuff, but it hasn't been really cold yet, so no threat of it freezing...

Anyone got a part number for fan jet screen wash?

Nice one!

Cheers Simbo! I wouldn't have thought twice about what screenwash I put in had I not stumbled across the article.

Though by the time I get my car, Winter will be over anyway so I'll pobably forget again by next winter :D

Try battery top up water from halfords, saves getting blocked jets and nasty lime marks on paintwork.

Only the finest Bradford water enters my washer bottle... no nasty lime marks for me! ;)

LIDL screenwash for me. States on pack undiluted does down to -60c. Many other supermarket "concentrated" screen washes only do to minus 7. No where near enough when you take into account windchill.

Lidl's packaging is a little confusing however as it calls it ANTIFREEZE but it is screen wash 5l cost £4.99

I found my carplan pink stuff frozen up a couple of days ago so i topped it up with the VW screenwash. It hadnt froze up with morning and it was colder :)

VW Screenwash is £2.80+VAT for 1.5L Bottle and it smell soooo good!!

Is this concentrate ?? How much screenwash will it make ?? I do about 6000kms a month, imagine how often I have to fill my bottle on Irelands lovely country roads.

I've never had a problem with Halfords ready made screenwash, I have never been bothered to make my own. Last winter I bought some pink stuff from Halfords, it was great and even smelled nice too. This year I buy something pink again from halfords - but its rubbish and streaks all over the windscreen, I think they changed it as it doesn't smell nice either.

When I went for my last service the stealers filled up my screenwash with VAG stuff even though it didn't need doing, christ the tank on it is so big its only been filled up about 2 or 3 times this year. Bloody con that stuff is.

I think the problem with the pipes disconnecting and leaking in the boot is a design fault, or they have the potential to be setup wrong, as so many people seem to have had problems with them. Unless some morons are just using water, I've seen people do this, pillocks.

I use Halfords screen wash and dilute with water collected from our condensing tumble dryer - Havent really had any jet problems with the Octavia - though I do give them a clean with an old tooth brush occassionally.

I'm using Halfords concentrate (5l blue tub) in a 1:4 ratio which has been fine at down to -3.5°C. Used it for many years in a VW Passat as well. With the soft Derbyshire water the fan nozzles stay clear.

Seems to get through about 3l of fluid mixture a week as those headlight washers pump out a lot. Must look out for the 3 for 2 offer again. Just a satisfied customer.

Got a part number please, as I'm getting quoted £3 for a 1L bottle of the stuff in a box.

Anyone got a part number for the fanjets, as my driver's side one is not what it used to be!

Take it out, give it a blow through and put it in either some coke overnight or white vinegar for an short while.

That should clean out most of the scale that's built up and if it doesn't work, you've lost nothing. You'll probably find the part number on the fanjet you've taken out too.

Yeah I did take it out and try cleaning it, but it's not had much effect. :(

Oh dear, shouldn't have boasted. Washers frozen today with a recent record low of -9°C in Buxton.

It's funny looking at the premix stuff.

The normal version varies from -3 to -5, the extreme version is -9 degrees.

That's pretty poor bearing in mind that some of the alcohol will go from the jets leaving it more likely to freeze up.
