First gear in vRS

Featured Replies

Just been back to the dealer with my new vRS but they tell me Skoda won't let them do anything with a difficult to engage first gear until the car has done at least 5,000 miles. Is this right? Anybody else having problems?

Reverse and second to sixth are fine, engaging nice and easily, but first is a b

When it doesn't go into first, have you tried putting it in neutral, lifting up the clutch pedal, then pushing it back down again and trying to engage first again?

Yeah, all the usual stuff but always needs a firm shove, even coming from second...

It should get better with more miles on the clock. Mine is still freeing up at 12000 miles.

My last Felicia had a very stiff gear change when new, but by around 5K had freed up nicely. Used to get worse when the engine was warm!

Exactly the same, mine seems better when cold :-)

Oh well, will have to avoid towns and traffic jams for the next few months lol.

It has the torque to manage it in third too

Strangely enough my old Felicia 1.3L petrol would move off quite happily in 3rd!

Are you engaging first whilst moving? Thats always going to be difficult unless you double declutch etc etc Second still flies from walking pace anyway especially I you allow a bit of clutch slip..

just seen your thread i had a problem with 1st gear just got worse went to dealer they replaced the gearbox under warranty. Is it crunching as well as hard to engage ?

No crunching (yet), just hard to engage. Seems to be getting a little smoother now I'm approaching 500 miles...

...my furby...at 55000..STILL has a stiff gearbox...although thats mostly likely the clutch on its way out..heh

I thought these traits were normal ????

Loads of cars that I've driven don't like going into first gear while moving - especially the Scoob ?????

Isn't it something to do with first being straight cut or something?? I confess to knowing nothing about gears so could be wrong...in fact usually am :D

Mine does it too! Apparentley it effects alot of VAG cars.

I find putting it into 2nd and then moving into 1st helps - mine has now done 1000 miles and the problem seems to be less frequent. :)

sounds like a doddgy reverse light switch to me
