Another Power Steering, sorry.

Featured Replies

Hi, My PAS light came on today (1.4 16V 2001), whenever I started the car and I have no assistance. When I got the car a few months ago it needed a steering angle sensor which I did and just in the last week the battery was changed but it was run thereafter and no fault codes. I have looked at the fuses including the ones on top of the battery and all seem OK. The fluid is fine but I don't hear any electrical noises form the pump at all. I had a look at the Haynes manual and there is very little reference to the PAS and no wiring diagrams. I have done a Vag-com scan and it had 2 codes; 00566 Steering Assist Operation 27-00 Implausible signal and Terminal 30 Steering Assist 07-oo Signal too low. That's a far as I got in the dark and -1 degrees outside. Can anyone advise, is there eg a relay and if so which one and what else I should check or might be the problem? Also is it safe to drive the car, I haven't yet but eg if I needed to take it to a Garage, the nearest dealer would be 25 miles? Obviously would prefer to fix myself, any advise welcome.

Most likely corrosion or bad connections at the actual PAS pump control unit under the PAS pump. If the control unit has failed, it's part of the pump, so have about £700 ready, or get one from a breakers yard for about £100

Thanks for the reply, I wil have a look and see what I can make of it. I didn't think the pump was as expensive, thought £200+, I guess a second hand one may be best. You are not that far away from me, don't suppose you know anyone who has one?

You could try Sports car breakers at Newbridge. Plenty Polos and Skodas last time I looked. West End Skoda Broxburn could give you an accurate price.

Theres a few new power steering pump/racks on egay too

It might be an idea to check the battery charging rate, it should be 14 to 14.5V, anything lower then check the load sensing wire from the alternator at the connector attached to the gearbox.

Cheers, Battery's Ok, just put a new one in last week, was reading just less than 14.5 then. I think the old battery was too small, I hope it hasn't damaged the pump and finally getting the correct voltage has been too much for it.

Can I ask as well, what is "Warn Status" in my profile box adn why do I seem to be the only one that ha it or is it just I can only see my own? I am not parianiod, it's just everyone IS out to get me :)

HELP! I have the cance of a VRS pump 2nd hand, (typical, you want VRS bits you can't get them when it doesn't matter up they pop) does anyone know if it's the same part, I have seen pics and it looks OK but not sure if all pipes, brackets and connections in the same place, anyone have a part number by any chance?. Incidentally RRP for a new one is £536 :(

I have never known any electrical ,or electronic item to be damaged by running it at a lower voltage ,than normal .It just wont function correctly or,at all. Only over voltage will ,or could cause damage.

OK that's good to know, so it wasn't my fault but it's knacked anyway which isn't so good :(

Anyone any idea on the part number front, I had a look at Vag-cat but I heven't really used it before and not sure what I am looking at, possibly 2 kinds; TRW and SMI-Koyo??

I have a 2002 8v 1.4 Fabia - that needed a pump -TRW - part number 6Q0423155AE. I seem to remember my filler cap had TRW on it.

LOcal Skoda dealer told me the number, I ended up getting one on Ebay at a few hundred pounds cheaper.

There's a lot of information on this site about these problems - one dated 17 2 2008 'Rubbish Fabia Power Steering' from rum4mo gives a lot of info about part numbers and which type of pump you need.

Are you sure your steering angle sensor hasn't packed up....one I had lasted barely a year? I also seem to remember there can be an alternator fault (or just a bad earth) which means insuffciient power is getting to the pump.

I drove mine with dodgy PAS for a month or so but it was hard work at slow speeds - especially 3 point turns!.

Thanks for that, I will have a look at the posts you mention. When the angle sensor wasn't working it was a different code but the people who had the car before us ran it for a while, I beleive with this fault code and several others on, not sure if that could cause damage to the pump but you could hear it stopping/starting and stuttering on tick over, lights used to dim too. We changed it and it was fine for a while therafter, this time there is no steering assistance, as in I switched the car off one night and it was fine, next day light on and no PAS. The fault code also suggests it's more to do witht the motor than the angle sensor but I will keep it in mind just in case, we bought a genuine part so if it turns out to be anything to do with that it should be possible to get it replaced, will keep you all posted.

Pump was the problem, I think running with the angle sensor away for so long has taken it's toll on it but who knows, maybe at 90k I can't complain, no-one would listen anyway. Manged to get on from ECP for £260 (although they initially said htey didn't do them), it's not TRW, obviously a "replacement" item but wasn't paying the dealer's £532, anyway, cars fixed and working fine again so cheers for all the advice.
