Speeding penalties - How Much - you can guess why Im asking

Featured Replies

Ok , I'm not too sure that I understand all this ........ :o

I thought that you were allowed a 10% inaccuracy of the speedo + 2mph ...............meaning that to be done in a 30MPH zone , you have the 10% =3MPH + 2MPH . So I thought that you can't be done in a 30 MPH zone unless you are doing either 35 or 36 MPH ..............obviously wrong !

Anybody want to buy a ticket for a Policeman's Ball ............................."I can't dance" I hear you say ........................It's not a dance .........it's a raffle ... :D

Pete,

10% +2 is the ACPO guideline for prosecution.

Some Forces prosecute below this (Hello Cleveland :wave: for instance)

How long have they got after the date of the alleged offence to prosecute, anyone know ??

I have genuinly said I dont know who was driving, they have threatened to prosecute me for failing to disclose the driver but also reminded me that its an offence to make a statement knowing that it might be un true so I cant own up if I dont know it was me. I havent heard a thing since mid Dec & the date of the alleged offence was 23rd October

They have 6 months to start the proceedings.

* off topic * my dad got caught last week in the lorry by lothian and borders police!

he got a letter through saying you have been speeding doing 52mph!!

nxt line said speed in the area was 60 mph lol!

and that he had to pay 60 pound fine for not speeding lol

how could you fight that? says on letter that they have a picture of the offence!!

but letter clearly state's that he was only doin 52 in a 60 ( but he was still speeding)

says he is just going to pay it as he dont want the hassle of them and then they take it to court

What type of road was he on? speed limit's for lgv above 7.5 ton are-

Motorway 60mph although limited to 56-7mph

Daul carridgeway 50mph

Single carridgeway 40mph

Still a bummer :thumbdwn:

One of our members who allegedly did an astronomical speed in a 30mph limit while being pursued by police, and was expecting the full force of the law to descend on his head, heard nothing.....so there could just be hope yet, Stuart.

Just a warning if you like from what I understood of the speed awareness course I went on the cut off speed is going to be dropped across the country 33mph in a 30 limit and you will be done. Errors on your speed will not be an excuse anymore, it's upto to have them check and if they are out or if you are in doubt the answer is to drive slower.

Dont know if this will come into effect for sure though, if it does it is a scary thought

By law a manufacturer cannot sell a vehicle with a Speedo that reads lower than actual speed, they can however sell one that is up to 10% over. Most I have come across and checked lately have been 5 - 10% over.

Mike did you remove your figures from your Sig or are you awaiting confirmation - can't remember now.

If the trip is callibrated as the Speedo which I guess it is then my Octavia is about 5% over, that means when I return 20 mpg its only 19 :eek: :eek:

.

- Some times speeding fines are just used for raising revenue and playing political games.

Road safety is playing second fiddle in lots of areas of the country

Cheers

You only just realised that! ;)

Catching speeding motorists is absolutely nothing to do with road safety (either vehicle occupant, or pedestrian) and is wholly to do with raising money for various authorities (IMHO). This can be demonstrated by the methods used (hiding personnel and speed monitoring equipment) and the locations (roads where high speeds are easily possible - usually long and straight from my experience).

If as much effort went into driver education and training as went into setting up or manning Greed Scameras, then there might actually be an improvement in casualty figures on the UKs roads, rather than see the proliferation of speed traps actually result in rising casualty figures. However, the one downside to this would be the need to invest money rather than make it............ :eek:

Agreed,

Also whens the last time a policeman gave your car a once over. I genuinly believe you can now drive a car with illegal tyres, dodgy brakes, & probably a tadge the worse for Alcohol provided that you dont speed.

A good illustration of this is the number of cars you see at night with only one headlight, one or no rear lights & yet they dont get stopped

Absolutely as I understand it - guideline only.

There is nothing stopping them issuing tickets at +1mph as it is still technically breaking the law. But not very good for public relations IMHO.

Exactly my beef with this whole 'catching speeding motorists' craze! It does nothing to deal with the issues you have raised - plus the fact that it does not help with sorting out the percentage of ppl on the road who still evade road tax and worst of all - car insewerance! But then again, effectively dealing with these issues requires investment - mostly in the form of manpower.

I am not in favour of flagrent disregard of posted speed limits at all, don't get me wrong - however, I am against unnecessary temporary road speed reductions and low 'posted' speed limits on stretches of roads. It is the inappropriate use of speed for given conditions that I have a problem with.

At the end of the day, I have no problem (necessarily) with sharing the roads with others who use high speed (this could be viewed as speeds above posted limits) as lond as they are:

a) Competant (unfortunately quite rare from much of the driving that I see);

B) insured;

c) taxed;

d) have a car in a legal and roadworthy condition (especially tyre condition);

e) are sober

f) not toking on a fat pound of weed;

g) are doing it where conditions (road, weather, traffic etc) allow it!

As can be seen - my speed 'wish list' requires a certain amount of effort to police and would need investment.

But then again - it has nothing to do with me......... :(
