Laptop Wireless connection.

Featured Replies

have got a wireless router and obvioulsy a wireless card for my laptop but am having big problems connection to the router and hence internet, notice lack of input on the site over last few days.

it did work and then it stopped, for no reason i have to add.i have tried fixing it but i'm sure i've made it worse.

so can anybody help me out, give me some pointers,if you live in Essex you could come and have a look and fix it.

just if i don't get it sorted soon its gonna be going out the window!!!!

many thanks in advance

Need more info, type of router card etc...

Does the net side work for anything wired?

If so have to check the admin configs for your router to make sure its mac address is listed and allowed?

Are you running XP? My daughters desktop with XP regularly drops the net connection, but SP2 sorted that.

What make Router/card, OS etc etc??

it has stopped connecting to or finding anything now i have to say.

its got to the point where i'm thinking about phoning someone who advertises in the local press or even Yellow pages as i just want to get it sorted.

the router is working net side as this is my brothers computer that i'm using now which is hard wired to the router.

i think i've probably changed a few things i shouldn't have but have been getting desperate and very frustrated.

I installed XP Service Pack2 and it keeps killing my wireless connection.

Have you managed to disable the wireless side of things totally somehow?

in order to discover the wireless lan initially you need to have SSID broadcast turned on, has it been turned off to enhance security?

You should be able to find the network with ssid turned on, even if you have security enabled on the router. You just wont be able to connect to the network.

have found that the Authentication for the wired and wireless Ethernet networks is not enabled and it won't let me enable it.

have got the wireless card working again but it is only connecting isn't finding a wireless connection, the router is on.

its also telling me that is a "Peer-to-Peer" network.

am thinking it could be the router, would it be a good idea to shut everything down, turn the router on and off and then re-start?

am worried about doing that as this is my brothres work computer and if the connection dosen't come up again he's not gonna be happy.

have now worked out that it will connect on an "Ad-Hoc" connection but not on an "infrastruture" connection.

i don't know enough about these things but that is sort of telling me that its the router.

am i correct?or barking up the wrong tree as i know nothing......

For connections that keep dropping, read this:

http://www.wired.com/news/wireless/0,1382,63705,00.html

I had the dropping problem, and disabled my "wireless zero config" altogether, and haven't had a prob since.

Sorry Alex, don't think it'll solve your probs though.

Cheers

Ad-hoc mode is peer to peer, normally used to connect pc's together not using a router. you need infrastructure mode to allow you to talk through the router to the wired lan, something on the router has been set wrongly.

Could you not open the router right up...broadcast ssid, and remove any kind of encryption, and then run the connection wizard on the laptop?
