Or would it plug in to my aux socket? As you say, I can jsut see it languishing on the passenger seat or being gaffer taped somewhere on a trackday.

Paul: how/where do you plug the iPod in? (In the car, I mean.)

if you have a cassette player then use a cassette adaptor from the adiuo out on the i-pod, if you have aux input in the car then direct to that from the audio out.

PS I expect tulip plugs are what we call phono plugs.

You seem to be calling them RCA stereo plugs.

Thanks, Paul.

Option 1: nope, just chucked the cassette player away in favour of an mp3-capable HU...

Option 2: AUX input only at the back, but never mind. It will however still involve a loose wire with RCA connectors hanging about...

BTW, is this stuff any good?

Oh my, linking these hyper-advanced Nomads to the car stereo also involves an ancient cassette adapter and a lighter plug.

What a downer.

Just checked with a picture - RCA plug == phono plug - same ting.

Examples here - 2 x RCA phono to 3.5mm jack plug for amp to sound card connection ? My old amp has DIN plugs but principle is the same.

Do modern HUs have easily accessible line-in sockets then?

(Be gentle with me - I'm learning ... :o)

Only at the back - the AUX line-in for CD changers. So not very handy for portable mp3 players...

And don't worry, Nick - this thread is also providing me with a steep learning curve!

This Kenwood Music Keg (10 GB at 400 euros) is beginning to sound ever more interesting compared to an 10 GB iPod at 500 euros - for my purposes at least.

I don't need a mp3 player anywhere else but in the car. The cartridge is fixed in its in-car cradle, like a CD changer, so a neat and tidy job. Ease-of-use and PC functionality seem to be comparable. And with 10 GB I don't care about it being proprietary technology for the next five years!

One that looked pretty flexible/cool/good value for money seemed the Dension stuff ( http://www.dension.com ). Almost plug and play.

I don't remember the make but I'm sure I've seen a HU with what looked like a 3.5mm mini-jack - socket - on the front panel.

Isn't all this a long way on from the mw/lw radios of ** years ago! any else old enough to remember the mechanical push button tuning, wow that was high-tech .....in it's day!

 Paul

8 Track! :D

You know it makes sense! :D

The London Philharmonic Orchestra in the back! :D

You know it will only fit an estate :D

And they might whinge a bit when you take them with you on a track day ;)

I have to admit to not being into my audio system and I still have the basic radio that came with the Fabia dispite looking at a JVC CD-tuner a while back! I didn't have the cash to pay for it or the insurance if it went up so I purcahsed a cassette adapter and I use it on the MP3 player and my portable CD player which runs off the cigarette lighter saving the batteries! The sound quality is good (the Saxo VTR boys :drive: are impressed by it even though Skoda radios are supposidly dodgy and the speakers are supposed to be rubbish) They had competitions on what they could get the radio up to driving along. The radio got up to :speaker: volume 45 :speaker: but then it was starting to get to my ears! Any ideas on what it does go up to?

My fabia speakers will go up to volume 30. But I've got a Kenwood CD player, which may have different volume levels for the numbers. I don't remember what the original tape deck went up to... I was way too eager to rip it out as all my music is on CD. Level 30 is really harsh on the ears, especially with bass up to +8 :D

The latest iPod's feature a dock connector on the bottom of the unit, similar to a data connector on a mobile. The pins provide a proper line out, power input and probably a few other things we don't know about yet, such as track information to be passed to an LCD display (or headunit??).

The connector is currently only used by Apple for their home iPod dock which is intended to sit by your computer or stereo, but it wouldn't be too hard to extend this and create an in car dock which you simply slip your iPod in and out of without fuss.

Lets hope someone develops this :)
