Rear Tyres Average life? - mine 3,500 miles only!

Featured Replies

If the car is front wheel drive its worth putting the old ones onto the front and wearing them out. My mum drive a 330 and her tyres will last about 50k for the set. We end up changing them all as although the fronts have like new tread death they are cracked and the ruber has gone hard.

.

Annoying thing is that Costco (Who I use as the Michelin's are good value) ALWAYS insist that the new ones have to go on the rear, so the old rears then go on the front. (Something too do with better handling on bends???)

That's the rule and they wont budge on it. As per Michelin recommendations apparently!

The reason for this is that you can spin your car if the fronts are better than the rears. If the fronts have less grip then the result is more understeer/less traction but this is more easily controlled by most people.

My mate had a Jag with 20" wheels and managed 65,000 miles out of a set of front tyres, and 40,000 miles out of a set of rears!

I thought there was a known issue with the rear suspension settings on the MK2 Octavia, and it needed to be adjusted to ensure even tyre wear. Might be worth checking?

Have a read of this for the changed camber settings: http://www.octavia-vrs.com/technical/common_problems.htm

I had my 56 plate Octavia vRS changed to those settings and now have no problems with the rear tyre "saw toothing" problem that originally affected the car.

Should the camber values be 1.2 degrees on the Mk2 Octy?

Should the camber values be 1.2 degrees on the Mk2 Octy?

Thats what I got mine set to, and it has cured the awful problem.

You said the geometry had been checked. But was the geometry then corrected?

I'd a similar, but not quite as bad, problem on a Passat B5.5 estate and it was not at all obvious if adjustments were done, just several pages of data. Subsequent tyres were ok.

If there is major wear or damage that needs to be sorted first.

So, are the new 1.2 degree settings now the Skoda standard, and should br set to this on my new FL vRS (which is waiting at the dealers for me!)

Im a little concerned then now, as i had the geometry setup not so long since with the camber set at 1.8 degrees.

This was with new rear tyres, whilst there isn't any apparent rumble yet.

The inside edges are starting to feather already.
