Rear Tyres Average life? - mine 3,500 miles only!

Featured Replies

Hi,

After having to change my front to rear due to them being highly worn at first MOT I did around 2000 miles and they were balding (Across whole tread - so I thought too much air prssure maybe)...?

So I took it to my local tyreplace they put 2 brand new tyres (Goodyears) on & said do 5 K miles and come back for a check, well after 3.5Kmiles I just checked at the weekend fully bald nearside tyre completly bald on the outside only, off side the same - I had had the geometric laser alignment done about 1 year before and it seems to have made the problem progressivley worse tot eh point now where they are just not lasting at all.

I wondered if this may be a common issue with the new Octavia or whether it is possibley somehting that has just happened to me due to the tracking done badly or somehting.

I have had the car from new and never had a know in it or anything so I have no idea why this would happen?

Any ideas?

Cheers

5K??

The rear tyres on my Octy lasted 32,000...

Your geometry is seriously out somewhere; you need to get to someplace competent, and get a full geometry done at both ends. It'll cost maybe £100, but that's better than killing 2 Goodyears every 3500 miles.

There is definately a problem there. I have never owned a car (front wheel drive) that the rear tyres have not lasted at least 10k and thats rare.

I would advise talking to a Skoda garage explain the problem see if they have seen this before.

Out of curiosity how fast do you take corners/roundabouts etc?

Your geometry is out.

You need to get it to a proper 4 wheel alignment centre, something most Skoda dealers do not have.

I had the same issues!

Its with the Tyre specialist at this moment I am awaiting their verdict, and no I don't take corners badly, it is a L&K 2.0 TDi which does go well when you ask it to, but I am not that sort of driver anymore - I've grown up a bit these days and drive very sensibly....most of the time! ;O)

It is definitly not due to driving badly I have had a few trips down the motorway from Northampton to Kent and Northampton to Luton airport (as I work away alot) and also to and fro to a local village where my son goes to school so no fast cornering or braking of any sort.

I am hoping its just another geo check and then 2 more new tyres and sorted!

I'll let you know the verdict.

If they don't pick up a huge problem with the geo at the front (and I do mean huge) then there is something more serious out, such as a dead bush or similar.

Well its the rear tyres that have a problem not the fron, and this started around 50K miles so would a bush go that quickly..? - I suppose anything is possbile to go at anytime really.

Do you know what the lilley cost of replacing a bush is likely to be for the rear wheels..?

Thanks for your input guys.

Vrs TDi Estate - Mostly motorway miles.

Rears are Michelin Primacy, and still have 4mm after 50K. Front Michelins lasted 38k.

Fronts are now Dunlop SP Sport Maxx and are at 3mm after 12K...unimpresive really. Minimal, if any, extra grip from the Dunlops yet 1/3 or the life!!! Working at an engineering yard (plenty of swarf etc) I check the tyres every 2 weeks and keep pressure at 32psi front and back.

Well apparently they checked geometrics and the rear nearside was off the scale!! so there's where the issue lies, they did the geo check for me for nothing I just have to buy yet another 2 new tyres!! Well at least it has been sorted (well I hope)

Had an Occy 1 no major probs at all, I have sadly had loads of issues with my Occy 2 since buying it new, bummer!!

thanks for everyone's input, interesting to see what mileage everyone is getting front and rear form their tyres though as I have had 3 sets on the rear so far (obviously) and I believe 4 sets for the front - 58K miles!!

Grobster, I've had similar experience with Dunlops (rubbish wear, and nothing special on grip); buy something else next time!

Could i suggest you buy a set of cheapre tyres (but still good Falken 912 should work) or some part worn tyres that are still legal and see if they wear off very quickly.

No point eating another £150 just to prove it's been fixed.

Jeez I thought I went through tyres fast. a set normally last my 4 to 6k depending on compound and season

Well just picked it up, they only charged me for 2 new rear tyres no charge for the Geo check. (which was off the scale for one of the rear tyres)

But then I thought I'd go through my receipts etc, I had a geo check at 38K miles and had 3 new tyres fitted at that time, I now have 58K miles and so approx 20k miles since the first one and guess what the 2 tyres I have bought are the 8th and 9th tyres since the first geo check and setting, so that's 9 tyres in 20K miles that is major league Crap!! So I haven't had a good deal getting the geo check for nowt after all as they've had 9 tyres out of me!!

Don't think I'll be going back unless there are more issues!!

I persoanlly don't think they tightened up the nuts correctly after the first check but that's just my speculation.

But just goes to show these Geo checks aren't always worth having - it's cost me big time!!

Is adjustment possible on the rear?

Never heard of any VAG car with any rear geometry adjustment.

I changed my Michelin energy's at 64,000 with 2 mill left on them, I am averaging 35,000 from the fronts and that's all taxi work

Yes.

Octavia II 2.0Tdi 140bhp Estate.

Rear tyres last me about 30-35K, fronts about half this.

Annoying thing is that Costco (Who I use as the Michelin's are good value) ALWAYS insist that the new ones have to go on the rear, so the old rears then go on the front. (Something too do with better handling on bends???)

That's the rule and they wont budge on it. As per Michelin recommendations apparently!

I had the same thing when I wanted to change front tyres (michelin energy saver) last year but this time they changed the fronts worn for new, i think it depends on how worn the rear tyres are.

Cheers, unfortunately it is a lease vehicle so I don't get a say in it. when I call them to say that they are ready for a change, the Kwik Fit mobile guy just turns up at work and changes them Sadly, I just get whatever Kwik Fit give me!! Based on this experience, I certainly wouldn't buy Dunlop if the money was coming out of my own pocket.

That's pretty much how I came by the experience; the Dunlops were on the car when I bought it!

I had this problem with a couple of vauxhall vectras mI had- would scrub the inside rear tyres and ended up with a droning noise sounded like wheel bearing had gone. Rear camber was the problem. Rear tyres typically last 40k. fronts 25k. 3k indicates soft rubber and serious geometry problems.

I thought there was a known issue with the rear suspension settings on the MK2 Octavia, and it needed to be adjusted to ensure even tyre wear. Might be worth checking?

38K? Wow, and people think I'm mad when I say I got 32K from my fronts, rears still over 4mm @ 36k

Not sure ythe lease co, but go instore instead. With lex, they had a price limit and the tyres in that range show up. I picked the only Michelins on the list. Did try and see if I could pay the extra for the rimacy HP's, but the monkeys at that store simply want you gone so they can stitch up the next punter.
