Hard to engage 1st, sometimes 2nd

Featured Replies

Hi guys, hope some of you can shed some light on this problem. I have a 2005 VRS thats done 63,000 miles and over the past few months its been difficult to change down into first when im slowing down (changing from 2nd to 1st between 5-10mph). I push the clutch down and move the gear stick half way into first then it gets really stiff, I can normal push it through but sometimes I have to put into to neutral and try again , then its normal fine.

Also 3rd to 2nd can do this to.

Im think it could be the gearbox mount or the lower engine mount at the back of the engine.

An ideas?

I have this.. but with mine it seems to come and go.

At the last service I asked them to have a look/drive with the view to re-aligning the setup.

They reported no problem and took no action. Oh well... It's actually getting better and better and seems to be sorting it's self out.

Change gearbox oil. Although 'filled for life' they don't say whos life, and all oils break down over time.

the easy answer really is don't try to force it into 1st gear whilst still moving, however low your speed

although there could be a little bit of clutch drag involved also

Mines done this for over a year now... had oil changed, clutch changed, linkage adjusted... still the same

I just put up with it now and never change into first unless 100% stationary. Its always worse when its cold, and its only really second and first that are notchy more so on downshifts than changing up but not exactly smooth on either

Sometimes its uber smooth, god knows what it is

Hmm thinking about it, I had my shagged gearbox and dogbone mounts replaced, which is when it started getting notchier... maybe the cars designed for them to be shagged

That's what i was thinking.

There is a known problem with 2nd gear but it has to be really bad to get it done in warranty - ie if you can't pull it out of 2nd gear or crunch it in so hard it blows up!

Mine is a bit tough but only when I first pull away after starting, once i'm on my way its fine!

It has not got worse since the sub zero / zero ourtside temps has it ??

Worse when cold ?

Or no different when cold or hot Etc ??.

Cheers

95% I dont force it but in certain situations I need 1st gear.

I havent noticed any change in it with different temps.

I had a similar problem but changed the gearbox oil and it fixed it.

And yes it can get worse with colder temps as the oil takes much longer to warm up and doesn't flow well
