Spare Wheel Provision - all Skodas

Featured Replies

So if I go and order the spare wheel for my car off a dealer, what will I get?

A normal 16" steel one or a damned awful space saver one?

Returning to my original post.......

The comments regarding spare wheel provision by Skoda are interesting, but I note that nobody has picked up on the potential RAC recovery issues.

If I interpret what Skoda have told me correctly, the RAC (ie Skoda Assist) will attend whilst I am a member of Skoda Assist in the event of tyre troubles and despite the absence of a spare. However they (the RAC) reserve the right NOT to attend in those circumstances if you are just an ordinary RAC member calling for assistance. They may or they may not attend.

Has anybody on this forum got any experiences to relate regarding the RAC attending when they have experienced tyre problems, and when the individual making the call has no spare and is making the call as a normal RAC member (ie; not a Skoda Assist member).

I just have a suspicion that this could start to be an issue as the 3 year warranties begin to expire (and the Skoda Assist provisions no longer apply). Cars may routinely no longer have a spare wheel and owners who have relied on Skoda Assist (via their warranty) in the past may have a bit of a shock when they call the RAC (or the AA?) as a normal member and their call is rejected.

Perhaps I'm asking this question too early?

Perhaps I'm asking this question too early?

I suspect the 'recovery' organisations will ultimately have to change their policies to cover cars with no spare as it's now the 'norm', unless the driver organises a spare. It will probably involve an excess on the subs though, probably in small print.

Just thinking about it, it'll probably end up as 'early response' by the conventional vehicle, but if a 'spare' is required it will likely be called up by a second vehicle. There'll probably be a charge for how long you keep that spare. I doubt the conventional vehicle could keep enough spares to cope with all the vehicles involved. Obviously having your own spare could save time and money later, or you could gamble.........

We've just ordered an Octavia Estate & chose to order a full size steel wheel with tools for £55 extra. I think this is bargain. I was told tyre will be 195/65/16 which is a little smaller than the 205 width on car but a lot better than the spacesaver .i.e. no speed restrictions ( apart from common sense !) and no mileage restriction (50mph/120miles on spacesaver).

I have a MK6 Golf supplied with the spacesaver . This "minature" spacesaver wheel is significantly smaller in diameter as well as in the width than wheel/tyre on the car. VW do not give you the option to order either the spacesaver , compressor & aerosol or "full" size steel wheel on the Golf. I had to order wheel ,tyre, boot floor raisers & longer clamp bolt separately at inflated spare part prices . VW new Polo has full size steel wheel as std.

I'll check bolt sizes on delivery. I would have thought bolt would be smaller in length for steel wheels .

Double check with the dealer. Im not saying you are wrong but our Superb had a full sized spare but still rated at 50 mph due to it being a cheap steel wheel & a mickey mouse tyre. We are about to order a scout & have been lead to believe the £55 option gives the same on this car.

Our Abarth 500 came without a spare & just the gunk. To make matters worse the body kit covers the jacking point & its so low we had to drive it up onto planks before the tyre company could get a jack under it.
Skoda Yeti does not have a proper spare wheel well. Boot floorpan from a Golf 4motion designed for a skinny space saver due to rear diff and back box underneath.

The 'space saver=full size' option if you know what I mean, therefore reduces boot capacity seats up from 416 to 322 ltrs. For some this has been a major stumbling block to considering the Yeti over say a Scout.

edit typo

In Greece both on the Yeti and the Scout come with full size spare wheel. Comparing the two, there must be a flaw in the design. Both cars have the same 4x4 system. Haldex 4th gen, and from what I could see at the dealers the rear diff looks to be the same size.

Road assistance companies either personal contract or through the dealer, here are required to come change, fix or tow your car to safety.
It makes no sense to pay for road assistance and having them decline your request if your car does not have a spare.
And if so, what do people do that have convertible cars which even a space saver spare wheel is not an option?

Though on the Yeti it seems that the boot size has decrease alot. The boot floor is at the same level with the bottom part of the boot door (i hope i am making sense describing it). When removing, folding, the rear seats you can see how much the floor has raisen. Even pulling forword the rear seats, you can see that a step has been created from the spare wheel creating a space that is useless in loading the car. Which leaves the Yeti with a disappointing boot size.

On the other hand the Scout also comes with a full size wheel and the boot floor remains the same. The wheel is fitted under the floor.

So considering that both cars have the same engine 1.8 TSI (diesels are not allowed in Athens, apart from taxis and if you are a resident outside of Athens) the same 4x4 system on it, roughly the same length, and the min of 3000 euros price difference, I obviously went for the Scout. More boot size for less money. And I think it's a better looking car.

And I am still waiting for the car, its 2 weeks over due

I've a FL VRS on 18 Zeniths and they won't fit in the well. I paid the extra £50 for the spare wheel and tools and consider it money well spent. A can of foam is no bl**dy use at all, good chance of it not working and if used will probably ruin on otherwise repairable tyre. All this is an effort to reduce vehicle weight and hence CO2 emissions. I made my feelings known to the supplying dealer and to Skoda Customer Relations who admitted they had been flooded with calls on this subject but it was a HQ issue. They were feeding back customer views. Incidentally when I bought my first new Skoda in 2007 I very quickly received the most detailed questionnaire asking my views on every aspect of the vehicle and the service I had received, new VRS in early December and as yet no contact. Are Skoda not now bothered about feedback?

My spare is a Bridgestone 16 on a steel wheel. Tyre is first quality and higher aspect ratio means same rolling radius as the Continentals on the Zeniths and from part no on wheel it is a standard steel so no quality issues (looking for four of these steels to fit winter tyres). Wheel bolts will fit. Obviously wouldn't go at the same rate with it fitted but way better than foam or a space saver. Lastly, you really don't want runflats, noisy, harsh and expensive.

we specc'd our new Octy Estate with the spare, asking the dealr to do so at no extra cost.

One of the other dealers we spoke to said that whilst a spare was a ~50 quid factory fit option, Skoda were gearing up to make it a ~100 quid dealer fit option if you decied you want one after your order is placed.

They also expected the next iteration of Octavia would be built without even the space in the car to fit a spare tyre.

My VRS 07 plate has a full size spare but.....

The wheel and tyre are not the same size has the ones fitted.

I have 18" alloy wheels. 225/40 R18 Z

The spare is steel with 205/55 R16 91V. Plus it is speed restricted to 50 MPH.

What's that all about?

Would it be illegal to use this spare wheel because it would not be the same type of wheel and tyre for the same axle?

If this is so, I assume the car will fail its MOT.

the restriction to 50 mph is to take acount of the odd size's on the same axle , and is only for temp use,

yes it would fail an MOT , but i'm sure any one would sort it befor there test.

Here in Australia, the Scout is standard with a full sized spare, albeit on a steel wheel. But the Scout is also pitched as a premium model here, against the Subaru Outback, which only has a spacesaver.

There are a few motroing writers here who immediately downrate a vehicle if a it doesn't come with a spare, given teh standard of roads and distances between centres. I'd be struggling to buy a car here which didn't have some sort of spare.....

I was not thinking of it being on the car at the time of the MOT but would it fail due to the wheel and tyre not being a match for any wheel and tyre on the car.

I always thought, if you had a spare wheel it would have to match. also would my insurance be void if I had an accident with this wheel and tyre fitted after a puncture etc. Because now my tyre is no longer to the specified speed rating for the car.

Yes it does say "Speed Limit 50MPH" but you know what insurance companies are like. Loop Hole!??

I found this badly listed item on e-bay, shouldn't attract too many bidders as Skoda is spelt wrong. Spare wheel and tyre
