Wheel Bearing Shot . . . . After 20k?

Featured Replies

Mine started at 18500 miles, or so, tyres changed at around 26000 and noise went. They had the 'stepped' wear - like the sawtooth described above. Did sound just like a bearing.

Mine too. Just buy tyres or put up with the noise as long as the inner edges are still legally safe.

It could be the tyres and specific tyres at that. Bridgestone are particularly prone to tyre noise when worn down a bit. I've had trouble with Bridgestone on a Mazda 6 and my previous Octy.

Some are worse than others for sure- over on SCN a few people reckon the OE Bridgestones are bad for this.

Glad I read this thread guys my octy vrs diesel goin into dealers on wed for a loud rumbling noise and intermittent fault on rear wiper . I assumed was bearing noise but after reading this will deffo get the tyres checked :o

Also is there a common fault with the engine cover falling to bits I opened the bonnet on mine today and the cover was flopping all over the place and had actually pushed the dipstick out of the hole so it was raised about an inch!!

Have you checked the inner edge of your tyres yet as i would bet my last pound it was tyre related, All the years ive been a skoda tech i think i have swapped 3 rear wheel bearings!!!! front wheel bearings another matter they get changed on a regular basis. if you look at your car sat on a level surface you can see the negative camber basicaly in lamens terms the tyre is sitting/riding on the inner edge. And over time the tyre gets uneven tyre wear and causes a rumbling sound just like a wheel bearing. TRUST ME i see it day in day out!

Well, I had a closer look at my back tyres yesterday, and I must say, you are spot on!

Inside edges are like a sawblade on the inside, wearing perfectly eavenly but really bumby!

I have put them on the front in a hope they may level out a bit, as I would like to get as much wear out of them as possible before the annoying noise drives me to drink!

Mine are the same right accross the tread, not just the inside.

We did say :)

They may well settle out on the front either that or the vibration through the steering will drive you mad!!

You did indeed, I will pay more attention next time.

To be honest, I dont really feel any vibration through the wheel, just a vibration in general, if that makes any sense.

Hopefully the now front tyres will sort themselves out a bit, I really dont want to replace tyres than have over 5mm tread left!

Not sure i would be in a hurry to change them either!! To still have 5 mm left after 20,000 miles is impressive !!

Well at least thats something to be pleased about, they may be the shape of a hexagon, but at least they dont wear out quickly....Result!

Always look at the bright side!

They should square themselfs off given time but a word of warning ive seen these rear tyres when they have been taken of the rears and put on the front carry on wearing unevenly (only when they have been realy worn on the inner edge though) so just keep an eye on them. p.s. so i was right in the diagnosis after all, lol. Unfortunatly there are a lot of people on this site who think they know things about skodas when actualy they know diddly squat and could possibly cost you money in miss diagnosis. likewise there are a lot of people who know heaps about skodas, Happy motoring.

Ouch! That's a bit harsh. http://briskoda.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/default/emoticon-0104-surprised.gif

Has anybody tried having the tyres removed and replaced so the inside edge runs on the outside ?

Good idea but unfortunatly a lot of tyres are not rotational but assymetric and they have a inner and outer marker. if they dont have the inner and outer markings then yes i dont see why not.

On my Leon it's accross the whole tread, so no good, also as others have said, directional or asymetric tyres make this tricky. Mine are directional, next time I'll get non-directional so they can swap side to side (and spin the other way).

Agree with that but a lot of them are just marked left side direction on one wall and right side direction on the other so check the inside, if they are like this then a remove, rotate and refit to opposite side of vehicle will work and if there are no direction markings then a straight remove and rotate will do.

Still need to get the underlying problem sorted first though !!

Been to the dealers today, definetly not a wheel bearing making the annoying noise, it is indeed the dodgy tyre wear on the back, which are now on the front.

No idea as to what the route cause is though! :'(

Design of the trailing axle as i said , many FWD cars are like this the Mondeo is even worse so i'm told, my Freelander used to do it as well

Brown_d9,

Did changing the front to the back get rid of the noise / whine / drone?

Thanks Bif.

No, It just changed where the noise was coming from. (Now noisy at the front)

Reminds me of the old joke :-

"How do stop a dog barking in the back seat of a car ?"

Have done this 3 times now on Octy TFSI and also Leon FR, symptoms the same..........Regretted swapping the backs to front especially on the Leon..

I would bite the bullet, get new tyres and have the rear settings checked......That's what I had to do with both.

Leon is getting replaced shortly and the tyres are starting to grumble again, but just going to swap over and get a new set for the back......

Took my car in today to get the Vredesteins fitted on the rear. Had the alignments checked, albeit not using a lazer alignment setup, all appeared ok.

Fronts have 3mm tread and are wearing evenly, so should last a few more weeks.

1 rear ok, just looked like a nearly spent tyre. The other was remarkable really - as has already been discussed, it looked a little like a 50 pence piece, in a subtle way - there were 5 or 6 flat spots, obviously the cause of the noise.

These were conti 3's. Strange that the other rear tyre wore normally, so something might be up with the geometry at the back, or the tyre was a dud.

The tyre-guy said he's seen this a lot with Conti's, but only on Mercedes Sprinter vans!

Back in the car, noise completely gone - very happy.

Remains to be seen how the Vreds peforme and wear, but time will tell.

Here's a pic - doesn't really do it justice as you can't really appreciate the 'flatness', but look at the lower tread line, which obviously should be of a consistent width - where it narrows (and you can see it narrowing again on the horizon of the tyre) is where the tread has worn down further.
