Xenon's

Featured Replies

I'm currently sifting through the options for my 'soon-to-be-ordered' VRS

I was just wondering if the xenon lights are really worth the additional £600.

It seems a bit steep but I've never had them before so would be interested in what people make of them.

Also I will be getting the MDI.

In the brochure it states that it also needs an adapter. Is this a special adapter or is this something that can be purchased cheaper from elsewhere.

They'll add value when you sell on.

OTOH some people don't like xenons for driving by; can you arrange a test drive in the dark over roads you use regularly to find out if you're one of them?

Once you have driven behind HID Xenon lights, you will never want to go back to Halogen lighting. It is well worth double the money in my opinion. Dipped beams will have a sharp pronounced cut off the light output is spread evenly with no hotspots. They cover a good width and penetrate well. They are very comfortable to drive behind even on dark rainy nights in the country.

They may seem steep but a worth it for a few reasons. Better lighting and the AFS II system which alters where the light shines in relation to your speed or steering wheel direction.

As for the MDI - it does need an adaptor (not very expensive) depending upon what you want to attach but if it's just to listen to music then an SD card will suffice in the Bolero or Columbus.

If you want to charge your iPhone as well as controlling it for example, then I believe you need to go down the MDI route.

Ive got them fitted on mine, never really thought about xenons before....................have to say any future must have them.

Worth the money, to me yes, would be nice if it was cheaper but I'm happy I paid for them

Anything with "good width and penetrate well" must be good ;) Seriously wish I had Xenons on the Scout, had them on a previous car(Fabia vRS) and they were great!

Damn, I was hoping everyone was going to say they were overpriced and not worth it

Looks like more expense when I nip in with my order tomorrow then :'(

Otherwise thanks for the help

You know you want to... and Front Parking sensors

Besides bending xenons, I would for sure add heated seats (-15 C yesterday morning!), parking sensors both front and rear (can save you from costly body repairs), heated nozzles (they are a bargain), HHC (not that expensive) and a MF steering wheel (ease of gadget control). B)

If I need front parking sensors I might as well order a new driver while I'm at it.

I would like to think I should be able to judge the front of the car.

(Famous last words. Expect a thread on how to fix front bumpers in the near future) :giggle:

Ah, but does the significant other have the same spacial awareness as you? :o

IMO and for my type of driving they are not worth it. The only driving at night I do is along roads which have street lighting from home to work, 25 miles incl. M1

Not worth £700 for me

Looking at a second hand car that had Xenons would not tilt me to buy it, now if it had a sunroof............

Heated Nozzles? shame you can't get them in this country. Had them on my 03 Polo but my 54 Bora hasn't got them. Too much cost cutting going on in these cars! Just gotta sit tight for the next 14 weeks on mine now!

Dont forget Maxidot ;)

Spare wheel is an option too don't forget

And if we're spending someone else money, Columbus, Sunroof and Curtain airbags have't been mentioned yet :giggle:

Xenons are a MUST in my opinion, along with maxidot, parking senors, heated leather, only thing I am not sure about on mine is the rain sensor & auto lights. Really not that impressed with it.

The adapter is basically a cable. You can see it plugged into the MDI in this photo

There are 4 different cables available, USB, Mini USB, AVI (standard 3.5mm plug) and iPod.

The iPod cable only works with USB iPods if you have one of the older Firewire models it's no good.

You have no control over the iPod from the Bolero you simply get to play songs from the iPod using the Bolero interface which is both slow and clunky. IMO the MDI is a bit of a waste of money considering the initial cost and the fact you need to spend half the cost of an iPod just for the interface cable.

If you want to charge an iPod a simple cigarette lighter charger will do the job for next to nothing. If you want additional music you can buy about 100Gb worth of SD cards for the cost of the MDI plus cable and you get exactly the same user interface on the Bolero with the SD cards that you get with the MDI.

Xenons are a MUST HAVE!!

As well as increased light output over standard bulbs (300% more), they turn with the wheel and adapt to the car's speed by altering the beam pattern, adding to their usefulness

GET THEM!!

I was actually looking at getting the Auto Dimming and MDI options.

My current car stereo allows me to plug in an ipod and control it with the head unit.

I was hoping the MDI would allow me to do this for cheaper than buying a new stereo.

As for the Auto Dimmer I'm not entirely sure how it would be helpful but it sounded good.

Would anyone say that either the Auto Dimmer and MDI are worth the cost.

If not I could avoid these and opt for the Xenons.

I have Auto lights and wipers on my Civic, but could easily do without them.

They dont turn on when you want them to..or viceversa....

Just a gimmic really

I have not specified them on my new vRS

I love the Xenons I drive in a forested area with windy unlit roads. The Xenons have already helped me avoid one Kangaroo at night and you definitely don't want to hit a Kangaroo with a small car like an Octavia.

If you are talking about the auto dimming rear view mirror then I think that they are worthwhile and work well especially with more an more cars with Xenons on the road. Here in Australia they are a standard feature on the vRS.

As far as the MDI I think you would know my answer from my previous post.

Xenons - are they worth £600? Apart from the argument of better lighting etc. bear in mind it is not £600 for some new headlights; you have to consider the additional wiring, auto self levelling system and headlamp wash within this cost.

IMHO - a fair price for the kit you get and more importantly much better lighting that has been well debated in the past (do a search of this forum); I would never buy another car without them if I could help it.

PS> My next car (with a bit of luck) will be a Yeti Elegance that has Bi-Xenons as standard!
