GO ON MOZZIEEEE!

:D

A good day indeed

Development has been steady but worth the wait

OK, is there anything I need to know before I install this?

Is it THAT much better than IE?

Is it much better...Yes...faster, more secure, highly configurable, small footprint, open source development of extensions.

Anything you need to know...Yes...Some websites have been written to take advantage of features in IE - these may behave badly in FireFox. Some site builders specifically block entry by certain browsers (the National Lottery site is guilty of this for part of its site). In general though any site built which conforms to W3C will display exactly as intended in Firefox.

Join the revolution

JK It's ok isn't it! Bit different from IE! has it's own downloader too...

Now to check that all the sites I've made work with this browser!

If they dont, they will not be W3C compliant!

Also, what simontreen says is spot on tbh.

I got it yesteday after my PC went TU big style and I had to re-format the harddrive :(

Not too sure if I like the new Firefox yet it does some things completely different to the previous version.

There's a couple of nice extensions I've just installed - they've probably been around a while, but today was the first time I bothered to look at the ones for searching... Best one adds thumbnails to the Google results page :)

All in all, much better than IE. Still a problem with developers blocking non-IE browsers, but that's ignorance for you. Powergen is an example of that. (Which is why you need the "view in IE" extension to add an option to the context-menu)

Have to admit, after downloading it last night. It is very good indeed. So much quicker. I like. :D

Personally I think firefox is shyte. I fail to see why so many people **** themselves silly over it. It takes longer to load, and crashes more often. It doesnt render any quicker than IE, and fails to render things that IE renders properly. If you remove it from your system it destroys all your HTML / URL file associations. I have verified this behavior on more than one machine, so its not my machine specifically.

So lets see:-

It crashes more (IE rarely crashes, but FF does more)

Its no quicker - to say so is a placebo. It does not render pages faster, and it certainly takes longer to load

The interface is amateurish. It looks worse than even the now 3+ years old IE6

It makes a dogs dinner of rendering some pages, and does not work at all on others

I am looking at it from an end user point of view, I realise that the rendering errors are not FF's fault per se, but I am not interested in these technicalities. I, like the average person, simply want a product which appears to work. IE still does.

Personally, I think Opera is a better browser than Firefox, it has much of the functionality that you have to waste time on with FF just to find it. And as an IE based browser, Maxthon adds tabbed browsing to IE, and keeps it excellent rendering performance.

I think its just another anti-Microsoft backlash.

[Edited for language - Stimps]

I am neither defending either corner because i used to develop websites and it was hard to get it working across all browsers.

1) It crashED more because they were betas and the 1.0 release should have this fixed

2) Initial boot is slower, however thereafter its lightning, whereas IE takes equally slow time to load whether its the first or last time.

3) to render pages faster you can turn off the initial preset delay to help communication by doing this. put about:config in the address bar and find the key nglayout.initialpaint.delay and change it to 0 (is possibly a default to 250ms) If it is not there add it as an integer key.

4) Its skinnable so easily changed :)

5) like i said its down to how the site is written and lazy coding will cause this.

Unfortuenatly the end users are only starting to hear on the news about security issues on their PC's that they are not aware of, and change is inevitable to help cope with this. Its like moaning about chip and pin, in the real world where its needed, change is sometimes necessary.

Just trying to put reason to problem, not a gripe or a dig :)

Paul - I can't remember the last time FF crashed on me...

You're right that IE starts up quicker, but apparently that's due to Microsoft's design - some form of preloading parts of the app in the background so it looks more responsive?

The problem with it rendering pages is web developers ignoring standards, and designing only for IE's interpretation of the standards, along with IE-only features, etc. Most of the time this isn't an issue as the majority use IE anyway. Some people prefer to use a different browser - like FF or Mac-based ones - whilst others have no choice, such as those who are blind and rely on screen readers.

Is opera free now?

At the end of the day I'm happy to use FF because of the extensions (Web Developer one is very handy I find), and because there are less malware and other crap that can exploit it. 99% of sites work fine in it, but when they don't I fire up IE. It's not an anti-MS thing, otherwise I'd be running linux as well :)

Is briskoda gonna get RSS feeds so we can check our bookmarks in FF rather than come to the site and click new posts?

Actually, the PR1.0 which was the last time I tried it, crashed more than the betas.

2) Initial boot is slower, however thereafter its lightning, whereas IE takes equally slow time to load whether its the first or last time.

Maybe its quicker after a few runs, but its still slower than IE to load.

I guess so, but then MS will surely fix the holes that have been found in IE, if they have not done so already (didnt SP2 for XP actually fix most/all of them?)

My extensions from PR1.0 don't work !

I think PR 1 was bug ridden possibly because of beta fixes which needed to be ironed out (still had a beta disclaimer).

Admittedly IE is quicker on inital run, but then it is built in ... grrrrr.

I found this the other day, had sp2 on a machine and IE6 had a VERY CRITICAL update to be run, and updates have been done regularly. One day, i think they'll all be gone, and i do think sp2 is the most secure, but not as immune as everyone would like/need.

That day will come thought, and everyone who is hardcore Anti M$ will eat words :D (admittedly i have had a rebellious period)

IE still has holes that were pointed out years ago - not to mention SP2 managing to re-open some holes that were previously patched...

That's not to say that FF, Opera, Safari (?), and all the others don't have holes - but they don't get targeted in the same way IE does, nor are they so integrated into the O/S...

Safari is meant to be a good browser, I've got it on my imac but I've never used it. Only use it for my ipod!

are you using this on firefox? Could you explain how to do it?

The If you go to the bbc news website, you get an RSS icon on the status bar, but not here

hey thats proper bo, how often does that list get updated? or do I need to click update?

I have mine set to time = attention span...so every few seconds then...only kidding; every 30mins should suffice.
