A different panel filter related question

Featured Replies

I have a green cotton filter :)

but its going to need a clean soon!

recommended cleaning kits? Is it a good idea to have an oily filter?

I dont wanna be a complete donut and dunk it in a bucket of soapy water but is that an idea?

I've got a K/N panel filter, and Kn cleaning kit.

the cleaning kit consists of a pump spray cleaner, spray it onto the filter, let soak, and then rinse with cool water. Repeat as many times as necessary.

Leave the filter to dry in airing cupboard for atleast overnight, if not a few days.

Then you re-oil with the spray oil, spray very very lightly, the dirty side of the filter. Spray evenly and in long strokes.

I'm guessing the Green filter will have a similar method.

Best advice is to follow the instructions to the letter

An over oiled filter will kill your MAF

yeah i had heard that it could kill your MAF (not that i actually know what that is yet)!!

so could i not just wash it dry and put it back in?

Just follow the instructions and all will be fine

i dont have any instructions with it, i guess i shall just consult the internet!

i could have done that!

thanks anyway

You dont have any instructions with the cleaning kit?

So I wrote a long post as to how it's done with a k/n, but I guess you didn't even read that

If that reply was a waste of time, then im sure u can find the answer yourself on Green's website

A small amount of washing powder or liquid in some warm water and a bucket for a short soak and scrub with a brush, followed by a rinse and shake. 10 mins in the oven on 50 to dry and job done.

thanks :)

As mentioned, get the Green cleaning kit. But remove it and examine it, and see exactly what state it's in. It may just simply need a vacuum and re-fitting.

Please be aware that panel filters need to be treated with oil (or 'dirt retention additive' as Pipercross would have it), as they rely on the surface tension of the oil to trap airborne particles as they pass through the filter medium. This is how they can work without being as dense as paper filters, and without the huge surface area that requires a paper filter to be pleated.

A dunk in soapy water will remove this oil, and unless you replace it, the filter will suffer from greatly reduced efficiency. You might get away with this on a normally-aspirated engine in the UK, since it's not generally majorly dusty - but it's not something I'd risk on a turbocharged car.

Up to you, though...

When servicing my filter i wash it out with thinners and give it a blast with some water, allow it to dry off then with the oil supplied by green make one spray per sweep over the gauze so not too much is applied. Then put this in an oven on a low heat for about 15 mins to bake of any residual oil.

Been fitted and serviced like this for 40k miles now of a total of 103k miles and still on original MAF.

I forgot the fact they DO need to be reoiled with the proper oil. The Green kit has washer fluid and oil, the washer fluid is literally cheap laundry fluid so you can easily use a substitute but the oil is vital and it needs to be the right stuff. Mine has now done two cars and 120k+

Sorry to change the subject a little, but with one of these filters does it produce much more induction noise would you say? Or any other noises for that matter!

A little but it's not really that noticable or anywhere near as noticable as an induction kit
