Single electrics ok for towing caravan?

Featured Replies

I've been pricing up towbars for my octavia vrs with rear parking sensors.

Will I be ok towing a caravan with single electrics on my towbar?( makes the prices a bit cheaper)

As I understand it the other plug is only for the fridge and charging a spare leisure battery. Is ths correct?

If so I can manage without it.

If you ever come to sell your car, with a single electric socket you can say that you only occassionally tow a light trailer.

i.e. imply less ware and tear on your clutch.

The single socket will do everything you need to tow. Charge the van & peripherals separately with a genny or site hookup.

Thanks Spudhoolio, I'd not thought of bonus of a single socket when I come to sell.

Hi Gord

As a experienced caravaner I bet after your first outing you will say "I wished i had the 2nd electrics fitted"

But to your question, the 12S as they call it is as you say for the Fridge, battery charge, reversing lights, and if it is a new caravan with stability control, and if

we are talking new caravan the new caravan will have a single 13 pin plug so you might have to have the whole lot !

but if you are complainant with electrics, it is a easy job to wire your own to feed the caravan.

If you want any more info drop me a PM and I will explain,

:S You WILL need the full 13 pin socket if its a brand new van or the 12s (grey) socket, why - because you fill the fridge up with cool stuff and when you arrive at your site all of the food is warm ! you won't have any reversing lights on the van and your battery won't be topped up, why have to do the job twice (fitting it later) when you should do it right in the first place ! speaking as a 20yr caravanner. cheers - Stuart B)

Dont know nothing about the new 13 pin arrangement, but if your van has the black and grey cables, you need both black for the rear lights, grey for charging the battery and running the fridge, you don't want to arrive on site and find your beer warm do you???/

you can find out everything caravan here

 Yes 'radio2' just backing you up as he needs both sockets ! where did you pick up a perm/sw 12v feeds for the van ? coming into your neck of the woods tomm night - glossop caravans, what do you tow with the Fabia ? cheers - Stuart

I'm not a "vanner"/don't even have a towbar (yet, but soon) but I'd future proof yourself and get a 13 pin socket for the car.

Adapters are pretty cheap as an interim measure if you're currently towing kit using 7 pin sockets.
