Short roof aerial

Featured Replies

Hi,

Photo attached of stubby ariel bought from eBay. Looks good, lets car fit into garage and while there may be a little drop of in radio performace, it appears to be minimal.

Why do you have a steam iron on your roof?

Why do you have a steam iron on your roof?

That would be a 'go faster' steam iron!

We fitted a Honda S2000 aerial which works fine, is flexible and is significantly shorter than the original, which we had no trouble removing.

MBrock: How did you come to try a Honda part? However I am pleased you did because it's a great solution, and I even think it looks better than the original.

Anyone else actually successfully tried other stubbie aerials?

I think you can fit one from a VW transporter

Looking at that photo, the mounting is a standard Hella one, so any aerial from certainly any VAG or Vauxhall/Opel will fit.

Funnily enough I use a long Vauxhall one on the Freelander to replace the huge great thing that LR fit.......and the reception improved!!

Hi,

Snow-Monster dimensions here My link, with a roof aerial I would think you would need to add 40 -50 cm.

Regards,

TP

My garage door opens to allow 2030mm of height. Can anyone confirm that the Yeti on 17" wheels ("SE") will go in without the aerial snagging......would be very grateful to get a definite yes or no from a kind soul with a garage door and a tape measure.

Thanks in advance

Has anyone fitted an alternative shorter aerial to their Yeti. I cannot find earlier postings on choices available and it would be nice to buy one that works.:)

Just measured up and the standard aerial will flex down on entry to garage but reversing out will bend it a lot!!

Cheers GB

Hi! I fitted a short (100 mm) aerial to my Yeti about two weeks ago and have observed no degradation in signal! Quite surprised at the quality and reception as it was extremely inexpensive - £2.47 + £1.99 postage! In my humble opinion it looks far better than the original and after two weeks of use can honestly say that it works just as well.

Ordered Monday afternoon - Arrived Wednesday morning...........Link to aerial & supplier

Observed a comment/suggestion elsewhere on Briskoda and so inserted a small "O" ring, between aerial and base, to ensure it is weatherproof. Works and looks a treat!

Hope this helps............

Hi. I fitted a shorter version of the current aerial. It is 23cm long (17cm shorter than the original) but have not noticed any degradation on radio sigmal. Link http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/CAR-AERIAL-ANTENA-23cm-ANTI-NOISE-WHIP-/330346872421?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item4cea353e65

The Yeti has two aerials - one inside the rear window (like any Golf) - and the other on the roof seemingly for fashion. Thus you can leave the one on the roof at home and will still have perfect signal - or, exactly the same signal as someone in a Golf would have. emoticon-0140-rofl.gif So fitting a shorter aerial makes no difference. Mine is also bought and waiting to be fitted.

I did however see all the Yetis at the Paris Show with new half length aerials. Though looking at all the latest cars delivered on the forum they all still sport the tall 40cm ones.

The car is 1691mm to the top of the roof rails (16" or 17" makes no difference unless you deflate the tyres :giggle:)

That gives you a 339mm allowance which sounds borderline. In need of a owner with a tape measure.

Speaking of tape measures, how tall do you have to be in order to wash the roof without aids ?

(Orangatang arms excepted)

So from the above the original is 40cm or 400mm. The aerial does sit lower than the top of the roof rails but 1691 + 400 = 2091mm which is 61mm more than the garage opening. And at a guess I'd say the roof bars themselves are more than 61mm above the car (see thumnails) - so oldstan, I think a visit to eBay is on the cards.

Hi, not sure I fully agree on the statement above on signal.

From experience on my Golf Mk5 which had a similar set-up and I had a short aerial fitted (Honda S2000) most of the time which was ok for reasonable signal areas but I did notice a difference in weaker signal areas (West coast of Scotland, Lake district and in hilly situations). I kept the original aerial in the car to fit as necessary and the longer aerial definately worked better in these areas holding the signal longer with less signal breakup.

If the rear windscreen element was considered good enough and the roof aerial did not make much of a difference then I doubt Skoda and other manufacturers would go to the bother and expense of fitting it to their vehicles. Just my personal opinion.

The short aerial shown on the Paris photos looks like the one also fitted to the new Polo so this may also be an option now for existing Yeti owners. I think it is about 20cm (8") long. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Genuine-VW-Stubby-Aerial-Rod-New-Polo-2009-/400161342832

True of course... but why then does VW not fit a beesting aerial to any Golf VI, not even to the GTI, R32 and GTD? Beesting aerials are a fashion thing (in my view) like body coloured door handles and mirrors. They serve no real benefit (over and above the window aerial) other than making some people feel they have something they like, or that makes their car better than the Jones's!

It is looking a close thing. Thanks for replies. If anyone does actually have a specific height to the top of the standard aerial, though, I'd still be pleased to hear from them. At least we know a smaller one is available though.

BTW....Whose roof bars are those shown in the excellent pics? Do look smart!

We get fine radio reception from the internal aerial, so have just left the roof one off.

Easy peasy.

When the aerial on our Yeti fouled the garage door head, our dealer said they would just snip a bit off and have done this to several cars. I snipped off an inch or so of the aerial myself and have noticed no degradation in signal at all. I did wonder whether rain etc would affect the cut end, but it does not seem to have.

Ta for letting us know about that...the dealer I saw today said buy a diddy one from Halfords...but your method is even easier. I would guess that you've taken off the end cap/protector thingy, cut it down and put the cap back?

Actually, I couldn't get the cap off as on my aerial it seemed to be an integral part of the stalk. So to date it has just been snipped off - full stop. If I find a compatible end cap I will probably put it on!

(Orangatang arms excepted)

I am 6' 3" and I can't reach the roof to wash it.

I am 5"8 and I suspect that the roof on my Yeti will never get washed. I am going down the eco route of letting the rain clean the roof. :giggle: At least no one, other than a basketball player will be able to see if it is dirty.

Also 5' 8" and I can reach the roof to wash it...........................................

but only from the curb side, and then I have to turn it around!! :giggle:

I'm 172cm short. I climb up on the rear wheels, grabbing the roof rails to reach the roof for cleaning.

Perhaps Skoda should add either Cuban heel or platform sole footwear to their SM accessory list:giggle:
