Wheels, Lowering and Insurance question :)

Featured Replies

Ive been looking at getting some new wheels on my fab, as its coming up for needing new tyres, and for the cost of 4 tyres ive seen some nice montreal II alloys that have just been refurbed in anthacite and have new Eagle f1 tyres on. £400 quid which i think is a steal providing they have been refurb and with the tyres. i did a quick photoshop of what the would look like on the fab

fabmontreals.jpg

As they are 16s i think the car would benefit from a bit of lowering, i was just wondering if anyone knew an insurance company that covers lowering that isnt goin to rape me (22 years old, 2 years NCB as i was on parents insurance for 2 years, 4 years driving experience in total, no bans points convictions etc) the cheapest ive found is swift cover at £650 but i cant have it lowered as they dont cover that. the cheapest ive found where i can lover it was something like £1050 through HIC but i cant justify 400 quid extra just to lower the car 40mm.

any help/ feedback on the wheels would be great.

thanks ;)

I was with Brentacre with my vRS. 23, 5 yrs PNCD, missus as named driver for £450 IIRC... That was with 17" wheels and lowered on Eibachs...

EDIT: Aidrian Flux were only about £30-£40 more than that too. Could have got it even cheaper still if I didnt want my NCD protected...

I take it you've tried using something like confused.com? As long as the car isn't dropped more than 50mm then they can usually get you a deal with a very small premium. Unfortunately you're obviously the responsible face of 22-year olds but you're paying for everyone else that isn't.

Montreals and decent tyres for £400 would be a steal as they're quite rare and they do look excellent on a Fabia. I'm not 100% on the Anthracite (I had a set of 16" Spiders in Anthracite and I sold them as I wasn't that taken with them on a black car) but the Montrals have more 'air' in the design and the photoshop looks nice enough.

yea i have tried confused.com, but they were coming back around £2000. The quote i got from HIC was from when my renewel was due on my polo, i explained i had bought a fabia and was just waiting for the insurnace to run out on the polo before i insured the fabia. she offered to do a quote for it and it came back at £1050 when i said i would probably change the wheels and lower it.

You should give Adrian Flux a ring.

I'm with them on a modified policy, (21, 2 years NCB no accidents). I can do pretty much anything to the car as long as it doesn't increase the performance and it won't cost me anymore! So 312mm brakes & coilovers didn't increase the premium.

Brentacre are also good, but AF were that little bit cheaper - both companies know their roll cages from their anti roll bars too! It's probably worth trying the other site sponsors too - Sky insurance and Chris Knott.

Good luck!

Nice wheels, and they really suit your car. Have you checked that they come with the right tyre size for your Furby? Those wheels are from a mk4 Golf GTI and if the tyres are suitable for the Golf they'll be 205/55/16 - you need 205/45/16

As for lowering, if you didn't feel the car needed lowering on its standard 16" wheels then there's no real reason to do it with these 16" wheels, especially seeing as how much it will affect your insurance. If you wanted to do it anyway then that's another matter ;)

Ive got a lot of time for Adrian Flux, they seem relaxed about mods. My change of alloys didnt cost a thing to declare, nor did the rear ARB. Maybe worth a few extra quid for peace of mind for future mod additions.

FYI, my policy went up £50 for lowering, but my excess went up £100!

Again there was no charge for lowering it either. Maybe its because im 34 and not 22 tho!

I've just renewed my insurance and have gone with Adrian flux this time and they have been excellent and they give you a discount with being a member on briskoda :D

Can't fault them, deffinately worth a phone

i cant see the extra 10mm in tyre height making much difference, surely putting 17" or larger wheels on it is a lot worse.

ill give adrian flux a ring tomorrow and see what deal i can get form them!

Have a look here and compare 205/45/16 against 205/55/16 and you'll see how much difference it makes. Don't forget the 45 and 55 parts of those sizes are the tyres profile as a percentage of the width, not the height in mm. On a 205 section tyre the extra 10% profile means another 20.5mm in sidewall height, so that'll be 41mm increase in the total height of your wheel - that's a significant difference.

I ran a set of Montys on my last Fab and liked them. They were in the original silver finish. I saw the wheels you're referring to and was tempted, but thought that they might look a bit small with being finished in anthracite. Also remember that they're a lower offset, by 5mm, compared with std alloys. ET38 plays 43. Most noticeable in the rear arches...

And yes, as mentioned, the tyre size does matter - make sure they're 205/45/16

As for insurance, Flux/Knott/Brentacre/HIC/Sky/Dazly are my usual ringrounds - in fact, I need to do that before the end of the month. Insurance, what fun :D

Cheers,

Steve

OP as already said 55 rather than 45 is a percentage not a measurement so to keep you're mileage and speedo reading correct you'll need 45 profile tyres

Also remember that they're a lower offset, by 5mm, compared with std alloys. ET38 plays 43.

Steve does that mean they sit further in or further out of the arches?

And would they still clear 312's on the front?

That wasn't worded very well, was it? Sorry, the Montys are a 43, so they sit 5mm further inside the arches than the std wheels.

And yes, they most definitely and absolutely clear 312s. I have a close-up pic somewhere and they look pretty good as result, as most of the inside of

the wheel is brake disc B)

EDIT: here you go, this what they look like with 312s fitted...

And this is them in a standard silver finish, with Eibach springs and Koni FSDs:

Hope this helps,

Its not 10mm difference, its 10% difference in tyre height, which overall equates to an additional 41mm on the diameter of the wheel. Given that the maximum accepted tolerance in tyre size is 2.5%, and the difference in the sizes mentioned above is nearly 7%, the speedo will under read considerably.

This means that with those tyres fitted and your speedo showing 60mph you will in reality be travelling at just under 65mph. As you go faster the speed differential increases, so you could easily find yourself unintentionally getting speeding fines and points, not to mention the tyres rubbing on the arches under load or cornering.

http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalcold.html

fitting 17s or 16s is fine as long as you maintain the outer diameter of the tyre. for 17s that would be 205/40 x17 for example.

hmmm, ok, guess ill forget these wheels then, the main reson i wanted them was that they had new tyres on, if the tyres are the wrong size they would still need replacing so kinda defeats the object of buying them in the first place. guess ill be sticking with standard alloys and just buying thenew tyres for them in the correct size.

There'd be plenty of homes for the tyres with minimal work if you had room to store them.

They'd fit any Octavia estate so could sell on here (I sold 4x 55 profile rubber easily when i bought a set of Octy estate wheels)

and given they are Golf standard issue somewhere like the Mark 4 owners forum would see them shift pretty easily I'd imagine and it'd cover a large chunk of the cost of replacement 45 profile rubber.

Alternatively if you have your heart set on dark rims try these

black-on-black for ultimate stealth!

My thoughts exactly. If you like the style and finish, buy them and sell the rubber on.

ok, does anyone know what 2 brand new (8mm tread) goodyear f1 eagles and 2 nearly new (6 mm tread) are worth? then can i get uniroyal rainsports to fit the montreals? IIRC the wheels are the same size and width etc as standard VRS ones. once i have the correct size tyres will my speedo etc work as it should? my car needs the tyres now so i may just have to buy a set of tyres for the wheels thats on it and forget about the montreals :(
