Cracked exhaust valve - possible causes?

Featured Replies

why is the MAF getting dirty?

You should seen the air filter. ;)

Consider your engines PCV system and its oily residue..

Air filter is also being replaced with a material one (prob Green?) rather than the current mesh one. All the other valves were fine so just replaced the one, along with maf and air filter (for piece of mind more than anything!)

Bill - last time I checked the crankcase breather filter it didn't look oily? What were you thinking - sticky valve or something?

Dave, how much is all this costing you?

sure i remember the MAF being something like

i read on here somewhere that a merc MAF fits and can be had for about

how would you know if your MAF was knackered?

limp mode, poor running... engine codes... that sort of thing.

i dont know exactly but i'm pretty sure you'd know.

dont worry, with a green panel filter your fine until you come to reoil it after a clean and then you need to be very careful and light with the oil.

Sticky/leaky valve, which is exaggerated by running more boost on chipped cars.. Breather system works very hard... loadsa oil fumes blowing about..

That pic looks quite strange to me but Jon's head looked similar IIRC - the intake side is all coked up with what looks a very soft carbon deposit arguing quite low temps, but the exhaust side looks just on the lean side of perfect. And yet the plug, which normally you could use as a guide, also looks black and sooty arguing rich mixture. I can only assume the piston crown design pushes all the heat towards the exhaust side somehow.

Traction control/ASR light comes on and stays on untill you replace the MAF and you loose ASR. Measureing block doesn't show any change in G/S if you blip throttle and shows well under limits (all on VAG-COM). Trust me I know.
