VRS oil question...

Featured Replies

I've read through the list on the topped thread about what oil to use. I notice that almost all of them list 5w40 - But i've always used Mobil 1 5w30 - I noticed there is one on the list & its Mobil 1 5w30!!! Should I start using 5w40????

Mate it's very simple you need to use an oil that meets 505.01 VW specification. If the Mobil meets that fine if not, get it out ASAP. The top end is complicated and the unit injectors are driven from their own cam lobes which are put under tremendous pressure so need special protection. It cannot be stressed to highly that if you don't use this stuff you will wreck your engine. VW are at fault to some extent with their confusing codes and not stressing this properly in the cars handbooks.

Viscosity range means not a lot, and is aimed more at climate conditions and fuel economy. The magic numbers are VW505.01 PD Oil.

The Mobil oil meets VW 504.00/507.00 spec and is designed for long life and variable servicing. According to the sticky thread and an oil thread on the Seat forum it may be OK. VW/SEAT now recommends this oil for cars with over 150BHP and/or cars with DPF filters.

Have a look at the PD oil guide. It's in the Technical Info bit

Yeah - the mobil 1 lists all the way from 502.00/507.00. So I'm hoping it should be ok - £50 for 5L is a joke!

Link to Mobil 1 oil spec:- Oil Spec

Link to Mobil 1 oil spec:- Oil Spec

From that information

^All VW engines with the exception of Unit-Injector / Pump-Duse TDI without Longlife Service and without DPF between 1999-2003 and R5/V10-TDi before model year 2006

So no use in a VRS despite them quoting it is 505.01 spec. Even the oil companies get it wrong.

Took the wise decision to swop the 5w30 for some Castrol edge 5w40!!! Cost me even more than the Mobil 1 - Castrol only gives you 4L in a bottle + a 1L bottle = £58!!!!!!!!!!!

Ouch - that is steep. Ever since i saw the local seat dealer using Carlube Tripple R PD oil - i swapped to it myself.

It is fully 505.01 compliant and i have used it in every VW PD engined car my family have ever owned.

At £22.52 inc vat for 5ltrs it's good value too.

Just a note, opie oils has motul 505.01 on clearance offer at the mo if anyones needing some....

What about Quantum Platinum. Perfect amount for an oil change (I believe) and is a good price. I think delivery is on top but if you buy other bits like oil filter/fuel filter etc it makes it an all round good buy (thats from vwspares where I buy it)

Opie oils...

Fabia vRS service pack

4L Castrol Edge 5-40

2x 1l Castrol Edge 5-40

Oil filter

£45 delivered this last week (with membership discount and free delivery offer). Halfords would have been £69.97 for oil alone!

But the Motul Carlube at £22 is a bargain!

I have heard that the Carlube is branded Motul

But there seems to be very few fully synthetic 505.01 oils out there at a sensible price.

Also found that if you go in to a eurocarparts branch - the oil is cheaper over the counter ( maybe your not paying for the free delivery on the web ! - haha )

Just bought 5L Quantum Platium 5w-40 from local Skoda dealer- £18.10 !!!!

I had to ask him twice!!!

I've just bought some Millers XFE-PD oil for £23.20 + VAT. This is about £27 if you include VAT. It would retail at £34, but I got it at trade price.
