How well are the Scout's bumpers aging

Featured Replies

I think the Scout looks quite smart in a Tonka toy way with the dark grey/black body mouldings but how well do they age after a few years of UV degradation?

Are they turning into a pale, washed out grey colour?

Do you need to clean them with peanut butter to keep the plastic in good condition (it does work, creates a squirel problem though)?

Thanks

Steve

Sounds like the problem is driving you nuts !!

Ive just ordered a scout & thought exactly the same but it will be no worse than any other vag car with big plastic bits & as Aspman has already pointed out there are varios products on the market to give them there sheen back. I find the most important thing is to use a wax like Swisvax, expensive but it dosent leave white powdery deposits if you get some on the plastic

I've not really noticed it on our 2 year old car. Then again, most of the time its caped in mud and grime so you can't really tell ;) Maybe the the mud protects the plastic from the UV rays? ;)

And some ladies stick it ion their faces to improve the skin, perhaps theres a market for selling "paint protecting mud"

I use 303 Aerospace Protectant about every third wash. I also use it on door seals and interior and on my Kayak, helps it go faster ;)

Thanks for the replies everyone.

I don't have a Scout (look at my sig) but am considering one when it's time to change my vRS.

My Scout's only a couple of months old, but I will be interested to see what our Aussie sun does to the bumpers. Then again, it spends most days in an underground carpark or under our carport.....

Plastic trim is always a bit of a awkward one, my first octy was autoglymmed from new and the plastic was always lovely and black even after 3 years when i traded it for the Honda, by comparison a friends octy was not autoglymmed and the plastic trims faded within a few years, there are a few video's on you tube that show using a heatgun to restore the greying to black not sure if it works, but i have used this on light scuffing of exterioir plastic trim and it does mask the problem. hope this helps, my vote would be atoglym ASAP the cost is definately worth the end result.

There was a 57 plate one in the car park at my hotel this morning and the plastic trim looked fine on that...
