Cooling warning light on for no apparent reason

Featured Replies

Hi,

I went out to my 06 Fabia vrs this morning (at a pretty chilly -2degC) and when I started it the coolant warning light came on. I had a check of the level and it seemed fine (a little bit above the marked minimum) so I carried on to work.

The car heated up normally and sat at the normal 90 degrees.

When I got to work i switched the car off then back on again - no coolant warning light came on.

Any thought on what could be causing this? Faulty sensor? Or is the light really sensitive to being close to the marked minimum?

Cheers for any assistance!

This happened (again) on my octavia yesterday - on that the sensor is 2 prongs and if you scrape the prongs with a screwdriver, the problem goes away (for 2 years in my case)

As above; it's a well-known false positive, but only seems to happen when ambiant temp is below +3C, and the car has stood for several hours.

Fixes:-

1) Run engine for a minute, switch off and restart.

2) As above.

3) Buy and fit a new expansion bottle!

Thanks for the replies. Looks like I don't have to panic then!

The same thing happened to me when I bought the car. The level was above Min. It went away when I topped it up with water to Max mark, the dealer changed the bottle under warranty anyway. Not had a problem since.

I wonder if this comes from using tap water instead of deionised?

Top tip of the day. When you defrost your fridge freezer, save and bottle the water for car coolant top ups.
