Land Rover

Featured Replies

Seem weird but I'm think of gettin a cheap Landrover (or atleast 4x4) as I want to do a bit of off roading. I was thinking Defender but, trying to fine a cheap one that is not a turd is abit hard. Dont mind the driving experience as I have driven one before. Second choice is a Disco

Does anyone have any experience or info that might be of help to me. Really I dont want to blow too much money.

Ta

Mike

p.s. It will be used on road by the other have to uni and back so it needs to be driveable

You could have a look at a good Series III 88" wheelbase - would be quite a bit cheaper than a 90.

Only problem is that the Series LRs are leaf sprung and not coil sprung.

Ex-army 110's are pretty cheap now and very capable!

Also older Range Rovers seem to have dropped dramatically in price - probably due to the thirsty V8 engines :D which like a drink!!!

Land Rover Owner International Magazine or the like would be a good starting point :)

Hope this helps!

ps. If I had the room and the money some form of LR would be on my 'to buy' list.

Mike[/quote']Have got 6 boxes of landy mags FOC if you want em.

Have had 4 landrover products over the years,

2.25 series 3. V8 series 2 "hybrid", Range Rover Vogue SE, Disco V8 Auto.

The best of the landys would be a defender 300 Tdi but they are expensive as they are the popular choice.

Have you thought of Ex military?

Used to have a '96 N Disco 300 TDi 3 door which we paid 6k for I think. We went for the Disco as we wanted to do offroading as well as have a car that was ok on the motorways and the only downside is the slightly longer wheel-base over the Defender 90. However, it coped with all the rough-stuff we threw at it!

Remember to budget for some all-terrains, a snorkel and some diff and tank guards ;)

Is there a source in the UK for cheap Ex-Army Landrovers ???

i used to be a driverfor a company called "britpart"they do copy parts for lannies, most are made by the same companies that do the genuine stuff.this was in 1992 so the pricing might have changed, but they used to be very cheap for parts (compared to genuine).

i remember unpacking genuine boxes and repackaging as britpart stuff

and viola google gave me

give the guys in my link above a ring, some of their customers take lannies direct from the MOD and export/flog to anyone with the right money.

one of the places i used to deliver to used to have hundreds lined up on there airfield/camp.in bawtry yorkshire, there was one place in cambridge that used to convert range rovers to 6x6 and flog them off to rich arabs.

theres a guy at work now ,that does stripped out 4x4 offroading i could ask if you like/i can get hold of him

Used to be a place nr lichfield, staffs...http://www.militaryvehiclespares.com/

Basically they are a goverment company disposing of all the landrovers the MOD want rid of. Loads of choice, many hardly used. Have been there to buy spares a few times...massive hangers packed with every spare you could wish for, plus loads of landys....:)

Been there, they had loads :D

Why not a get a cheap V8 range rover and a shagged defender 90.

Cut a foot and a half out of the chassis on the range rover and fit the defender body shell. Only problem I had when I had one of these was watching the fuel guage visibly move at above 80mph

For anyone in the north west, Crook brothers ne Houghton Tower (between blackburn and preston) always have a good mix on landies, inc forward controls, 6x6 range rover fire tenders etc...

Personally I'd go Jap as I think landies command too much for what they are, old daihatsu or suzuki SJ for offroading...

Flatfourburble...

Did a quick search on Autotrader for 90 2.5 TurboD and foundone at RJ Landrovers - P/EX as taken in but just

Cheers y'all.

Budget is about 2k, to leave me money for insurance spares and to budget for diff, steering and tank protection.

I think a diesel is my top choice as is it being a Landie, I know the Suzuki is a good off roader but I'd rather have a landie.

Jason if your friend at work could give me any pointers or places to have a look at for a landie then that would be very good of you.

Chris, I've seen a few cheap disco's with the 200tdi instead of the 300tdi unit dont s'pose you might have any point on what too look out for?

Turbostream, I've tried that web site and given them a call, at the moment they dont have much stock in, but that could change.

Spinndrift, I've seen a few people do that, as funky as it would sound, I'd have to go diesel, though I did read about a 90 with a 4.6 V8 fitted that will do about 120!! Scary!!

Ta Mike

Other than that if you are going down the ex-military route try and find an ex-RAF 110. Will probably be in bright yellow but will have spent its life on an airfield and not either slung under or being dropped from a helicopter!!!

Gernerally it's the lightwieght ones that have been parachuting.

Some of the ex RAF 110 will have had a hard life especially those that have been used at stations with gliding schools were they are used for launching or ragging down the field from launch control to the winch.

That's what I had in mine - 11 MPG though

Another tip for you is that if you're not going to use it for a while put a couple of blocks of wood between the clutch plates otherwise it will sieze and it's a right bugger to replace.

I'd steer clear of a DISCO as the panels aren't as bolt on bolt off at the defender.

If you are serious about off roading don't forget to allow for the price of a snorkel kit.

200TDI unit is just as strong just a little less powerful I think. Easy enough to use a screw driver and safely up the fuelling a bit though. I guess it depends what you're going to be using the Disco for as we wanted the body work to be in very good condition - we were advised to check for rust (around wheel arches and fuel tank), signs of water coming in through the seals (alpine lights) and tailgate. Walk away from any with wet boot carpet as you'll more than likely be looking at replacing the floor pan. Most of them will not have had a rough life off-road so check that the low-ratio gearbox still works and also that you can easily engage diff-lock. Our one was a bottom spec so only toys were electric windows, 5 alloys, power steering, central locking and alarm. Side steps are not very good offroad, either ;) Came with a FSH at a Landy specialist but our mechanic mate serviced and tweaked it, and did the cambelt for us, etc. He said they're very easy to work on :)

Should pull pretty strongly in all gears when you drive it and I seem to remember the brakes being rather good at stopping it, despite not having ABS. Think we were seeing between 25-30mpg out of it but the fuel tank is huge (90l  )

Fitting a Snorkel on the Disco will involve drilling the wing rather than just pulling off a cover like the Defenders do ;) Also budget for a pair of wading plugs in case you fancy crossing a river (think they're about 70p ;)).

Sack off the wading plugs and get a wading kit

Disco snorkel fits like this.

maybe it was yours that I have seen (Royal Blue 90) ok so maybe I'll go back to the defender idear. another possiblilty is a Nissan Patrol?

Thanks a lot @ Jason & Turbostream ...

Well, it is really not urgent this time - just one of my "what to get next if the Octi has to go - ideas", but I am sure that in the UK it would be much easyer and cheaper to get a Defender 110, that in Germany...

They are very expensive, and EX-Army ones are quite hard to get ...

If interested in german vehicles : on www.vebeg.de there are many gouvernement limousines ( also armored ) over military vehicles up to ships and aircrafts to be sold :D

My dad bought one from Witham Specialist vehicles - again ex-MOD and emergency service landies Try this link

cheers stu, I will have a quick look, do you know if its a walk in place or by appointment?

Not sure im afraid - my dad rang up and arranged to go there so can't really say whether it would be open for people just to walk in. Its got the contact details on the site though so you should be able to give them a bell to find out.

Cracking place though with some weird and wonderful things for sale - just don't some back with an armoured car or all-terrain troop carrier
