PC Game advice

Featured Replies

For some strange reason I feel like buying myself a PC game as a form of relaxation. Having researched it I have given up on the idea of a modern graphic intensive action game such as Doom 3. The other type of game that interests me is a strategy game, as I loved Age of Empires and Age of Empires 2.

I have had a couple of games suggested by work mates.

Rise of Nations - about

Half life 2, not as power hungry as doom and very good IMHO

Will second that about HL2.

It runs fine on my system and I am using an old 128Mb GeForce 4 Ti 4200 card. And you can get better cards than that for about

I like a little strategy/wargame called Blitzkrieg..it reminds me of playing soldiers when I was a bairn

beautifully rendered little tanks and aircraft all in real time so no waiting around

no resources to manage...you get all you are going to get at the start.

runs on ancient systems...I have a ninja PC and am playing half life 2 at the moment..but I still go back to this

you can also download free stuff for it...mods, missions and whole chapters for nothing so its got a decent lifespan. plus 2 official add-ons now. lots of stuff to keep you going

FTM, play CS tonight then ;)

I'd go fo rome total war, I should of but I went for THQ Dawn of war....finished it way to quickly and was left feeling a little cheated. I guess it's strengths lie in lan/internet sessions. The trick with most of these is to decide how to beat the AI, since all are flawed in someway shape or form. I personally go for the bunker down and let them get stuck or the lets go right from the off if it fails I'm dead anyway approaches. Although both seem to end up at the trade off position where we fight over a pixel for a few hours; typically when I'm very bored...Rome; is my vote, but it might end quickly aswell. Medival war didn't that was good.

Soldiers : Heroes Of World War II all the way. New patch just released so bugs are now sorted. Bloody hard though :(

Just installing HL2 now (it's unlocking the game actually). I'm a long time HL player and I've been waiting for HL2 for a loooong time, very excited, especially from the generally excellent reviews the game is getting from owners. :)

PM me your steam name and ill add it to my list :), i tend to play CS quite a bit because i like the randomness of a wider level :)

Rome all the way :nerd:

Well being a bit reluctant to spend loads on a game I bought Total War: Warlord edition - ie the original Total War title costing

A bit late with my suggestion, but look for Total Annihilation - definitely in the bargain bin category now, but very very playable (lots of mods still around for it)...

Last time I did a search some guy had zipped the game up and had it on his website for all to download, so you might even get it for nothing ;)

(But HL2 totally rocks.... why play anything but that?)

That is responsible for taking way to many hours from me........brilliant strategy game. And against 4 computers it's definitly a case of serious bunker tactics or dragons teeth ring and bertha's to hold the line :D bloody loved that game. The mod's and extra units transformed it...although airpower rocked them all...tomcat's yay. Wonder what unit cap I could get to now with a modern PC versus a Pentium 1....oh my god it would be insane.

I love Medieval: Total War and the Viking Expansion, superb strategy game on two levels, both the Battle side of the game, and also the map/ resource building side. I find it to be quite difficult in campaign mode, but the amount of depth and detail in the gameplay is amazing. I love watching battles develop and unfold as I command my troops, although it more often than not ends up with my general fleeing the field, accompanied by a sarcy comment from some bloke who sounds suspiciously like Sean Pertwee.

Call of Duty is hard to beat as well, if you are a fan of Saving Private Ryan/ Band of Brothers you will love it.

One of the few games I was almost reduced to tears for more than the obvious reasons of gameplay, trying to get onto the beaches , general moving around.

It really did somthing different in the back of mind compared to the "films" and "footage" viewed previously and subsquently. Of course nothing like the reality; in fact a little silly, but to me it made me think.

Yep, it definitely makes yo urealise how much the men who fought in the war went through to give us the freedom we now possess, at times the game can be quite harrowing, especially when you play as the Russian conscript sent into the Battle of Stalingrad minus any form of weapon. Its amazing looking across the battlefield as bullets and bombs rain down on the unfaltering Russian troops. Quite coincidental that the day I managed to finish it for the second time happened to be Rememberance Day Nov. 11th.

Good choice William, as Medival:TW is a bit more complex than Shogun, and Rome :TW is more complex still. Also consider the X-Com games, particularly the original as I think it is now available as 'abandonware' .
