I prefer the ones on the saab 9-3 they look slighly more subtle that the bling audi ones. Though think the way thery dim when the indicators come on is quite good. The ones on the new e-class look awful like they forgot to design them on and thought oh dear lets just shove either a second fog light or that upside down L on that will do.

how many car makers had them before audi?

Volvos had them back in the 1980s because they were law in Sweden. But they were double filament side lights and went to the dimmer lights when you put parking or headlights on.

And they do dazzle in all but the brightest sunlight, although it's probably not so bad on your wider roads. When I drove one of those Volvos as an Ambulance car here I always put dipped headlights on as soon as the light levels dropped.

I'm not sure how they add to safety here as I always shade my eyes when I meet a car with them on.

i tell you alot of people have very sensitive eyes! lol

and im going to see so many cars with taped up and disconnected LEDs soon lol

yea right :rofl::D:rofl::D

What was wrong with Audi just using the main beam bulbs, just turned down a bit? (It could be a separate bulb in the same reflector possibly - I'm not sure)

In the UK you previously had to run a dim dip system for side lights.

Easy way to get DRL would be to put the lights on when the engine is running automatically and have dim dip relay.

On old citroens it was 2 relays, one was missing if you didn't have Scandinavian lights (on all the time) and put power to the lights when the engine was on, the other put a small amount of power through the headlight bulb when sidelights were on to make them acceptably bright.

So in summary i like OEM factory fitted DRL LEDS but hate aftermarket ones!

+1

we will see how many of the 'dont like' and 'hate' led's bunch switch them off when their new car has them

What will happen next year when DRLs become mandatory? Will all new car's have LEDs or will they simply use the sidelights or headlights like Volvo's have done for years?

I suspect a mixture of the two

yeah i agree a mixture no doubt so if you dont like LEDs people may need to pick a car that uses the sidelights instead lol :giggle:

If you look, cars like Vauxhall (Insignia, and new Astra mainly) have a normal bulb as the DRL if the car has standard headlamps, and LED's if it has xenons. Wouldn't surprise me to see this catching on, sort of confirms the cars status in the model range and the shiny LED's will set it apart from the lower models.

Can't you take the fuse out? It looks as though we're going to have to drive round being dazzled all the time. Personally I have to shield my eyes whenever I meet them. If daylight lights are needed, dipped headlights would be better as they don't dazzle as much.

I can also see it leading to even more idiots having foglighta on when there's no fog.

Has there been any update on this? Can they be switched off now?

I'm looking at the VRS but don't want the DRL's!

No you can't turn em off!

All new cars that are manufactured will have them as well soon,so it won't matter which car you buy if

your buying new after 2011.

Thanks Taff,

That's bloody crazy....there must be a fuse or something - I can't see the traffic cops having them on if they are using the new FL VRS?

Must be able to unplug them, or cut the wire or something if you really hated having them. (Not seen the wiring, so could be wrong though!)

You can switch the DRLS off on the vRS. It has to be done stationary ignition on engine off by holding the indicator stalk towards you and either up or down for on or off. If Maxidot is fitted you can use that. I'm in the if its factory fitted its ok anything else is chav with a capital S :swear:

I didn't know that!
