RUST on NEW vRS Wheel hubs :-(

Featured Replies

]Hi all...

Eventually got the new Octavia vRs in December... Awesome machine...!

However, major problem with RUST on the hubs (all 4 wheels) between the alloys & the brake discs... These should be silver...

Spoken the local dealer on Monday. It's now Friday & he has not been back to me yet...

He took photo's, but it does seem to be a problem with all of them... (Not come across before - had several Octavia's, 2 vRS's...!) The demo at DM Keith in Wakefield was really bright orange rust, far WORSE than mine...

So, I await him getting back to me, but I'm not a happy skoda driver :-(

Sure, I could hammerite them, but I don't feel I should have to...! Only three months old & less than 600 miles on the clock on a £21.5K car... (RRP)

Would welcome ur comments/experiences on this... Will keep posted with any progress... NEED ACTION...!

Rust on the bell of a 1-piece cast-iron disc; who'd 'a' thunk it, eh? ;) Bottom line, cast iron rusts unless regularly polished (like disc rotors are); get over it.

cast iron what do you expect common on all cars

That's life. Learn to co-exist peacefully or paint it. I don't worry about it and just rub it back occasionally when I'm giving the wheels and callipers a good clean.

Oh, they all do that sir.....

Fear not, I was as indignant. How much money and they are going rusty!!!! Till it was pointed out they were cast iron and I was welcome to look at the majority of the other cars on the lot.

Get steel wheels and solid trims, then you wont need to see it emoticon-0105-wink.gif

They all do it, as thats what unpainted cast iron does.

I noticed the same problem on my Scout.

It actually got better the more I drove it, I imagine your car has been sat out in the open for some time before delivery.

A friend recently bought a brand new Kia Ceed, their rusty hubs soon weathered too!

wondering is it safe to clear the area of rust then user hammerite paint on it?

cos ive noticed it as well after all this snow/salt

Perfectly Safe, I have done it myself

Great job mate.

I had same problem with my 1 year old Vrs and dealer didn't want to know. As it is a company lease car I won't bother re-painting it.

By the way, where did you buy that chrome valve cap?

I'm not sure mate, it was a car I was detailing and the rusty bells were letting it down so gave them a spruce up

I've just traded in my 3 year old vRS TDi and I had no rust on the hubs! Still silver.

The wheels go look nice :)

What colour silver did you pain the discs?

It was just hammerite smooth silver brushed on, wire brushed prior to that.

Did mine too. Worth doing the wheels in alloy wheel polish to stop the dust building up while they're off.

My point exactly, NO OTHER OCTAVIA that I have owned has done this... (2001 vRS & 2007 vRS Octavia's)

Cannot remember whether they were the same hubs though...?

Thay may be made out of cast iron, BUT THEY ARE PAINTED SILVER, so why use inferior (cheap) paint for this application Skoda...? Hammerite, or similar would have lasted years, from new :-(

Tanks for that :)

Must do it when the weather settles :)

In the words of many an analist (ooerrrr) "Thats why they call it detailing"

I got mine <chrome valve covers and caps> from the wheel specialist when they were painted smoked chrome , but my wife has just had 2 tyres from Kwik Fit and they cost £4 for all 4. It might be worth popping in to ask if you can have some without replacing a tyre

, worth a try

I did mine as well last year - still no rust showing - easy mod .

..............now you know why you bought that trolley jack from Aldi t'other day for.....!

its very anal i agree but ive painted mine as well,as said above rusty hubs let the car down i gave them a quick wire brushing then painted them with hammerite smooth silver. its matches with the wheels really well and just finishes it off better.

one little tip paint the hub and the little chamfered edge its visible just behind the wheel if you dont you will see a small ring of rust!
